straightening a skeg

thanks to BobVT for posting re: bent skeg.<br />my bend is very slight and you wouldn't really notice it unless you really looked. <br />(which I did after reading post with sim. prob.)<br />is there a safe way to try to straighten this <br />myself? afraid she'll break.<br />my

You can tap it with a hammer if you back it up with something heavy while tapping. I did mine and found that it would bend easily. It will break if you don't back it up.

I have a glastron 235 outboard/inboard. the skeg is bent about 1/2 to 3/4". Do you need to heat up the skeg before backing up and tapping w hammer?

LUs, of which the skeg is a part of, are castings...they don't like to be bent, and may crack if you bend them back through the above mentioned procedures...

The good thing is, it is simply there to protect your prop, and any good weld shop can re-weld one on for you should it break. But they need to know what they're doing, as excess heat can fry the inner seals in the gearcase....
