I was actually talking to a guy at the marina recently about this exact same thing. Lots of boats from 2000 and before seems to be rotting out. He said he thinks it has to do with increased corrosive components in the air. Like too much pollution or moisture or something similar not mixing well with the boats. He's seen plenty of them brought in the past 2-3 years that were really nice boats up until really recently. The strange boat disease is alive!

That is generally true, unless it's a Starcraft

In my half hearted attempt to locate boat #2 (tinny) I noticed on Marketplace there weren't alot of newer tins available. There's a few a few model years old then they jump into the early 80's or older in abundance. This regardless of make.

And surprising enough...no Trackers. I find that odd although I consider them a one and done kind of boat.

A load of rigid top Center Consoles 18 to 25 Length. 1/4 mile from a dealer. On a busy state road. ob and ib. Very depressing to not see the number of them not changing. WE have almost no private or large freighters on the river.

dont you members of the Starmada rebuild them every few years......
We do repairs and improvements for sure, It is just that aluminum in fresh water is very sturdy, besides, what's not to love?
I would also like to add the Penn Yan rigs that seem to last forever on the great lakes. I fish from a 1989 28 footer and we have had offers to buy this rig for far more than we expected. Except that this too is a love affair and she is not for sale until after we kick the bucket.

Sylvan is Starcraft in all but name. It is made in the same factory by the same people. When the founder of starcraft passed , the company was divided among the kids. The daughter's share continued under the name Sylvan, There are some very minor differences.

In all honesty....I think it comes down to how the boat is stored and maintained ! Look around...I am out in the country where there are numerous barns and outbuildings, most have a boat sitting outside and very few have covers on them. Some have not been moved in years. Within a 5 mile radius, I would bet at least two dozen boats sitting out in the weather.
One guy, a couple miles down the road, built a new house about 15 years back, then bought a boat and then a motorhome, but no barn or other storage building. The boat has a rotted hull, and on its second engine from winter freeze. The motor home is junk, engine tied up, Genny was toast after 5 years, and the roof leaks. These expensive toys sat outside in the weather without even a simple cover. As I look around, I see a lot of newer not that old, boats sitting outside. If you stop and ask if they are for sale....naw, they are junk...cheap boat that fell apart after 5 or 10 years, says the owner ! They were made to be used outdoors, so it shouldn't hurt to leave them sit outside, is the typical response !!

Actually Starcraft was busted by the gov't for creating a monopoly on aluminum boats. The company was forced to breakup and Sylvan, Northwood, and Smoker craft was formed along with some other small boat companies.

It's all how it's taken care of, just like a car. One that's kept inside, washed regularly, and all the maintenance done can outlast the owner, barring any accidents anyway.
Of course, very few people put that much care into anything, and not just because of laziness. So they rot in

Same around here. Lots of boats sitting out, quite a few uncovered. Guy built a huge new home on a big parcel about two mile up the road. Brand new boat. Probably as big as you can trailer without a permit. Been sitting in the same spot for two years.

Money never buys quality today.
Farmers use the logic of. If it stops working ? Let it rot in the fields. Very common in N J farm lands.

Sylvan is still a StarCraft hull.
