I have a 5.0L EFI Mercruiser -00 that is not starting perfect. I can explain a workaround that starts the engine but I am looking for the explanation: The engine won´t ingite, if I detach a spark cable, put in a spare spark and hold it to a the engine block (firm growned) the engine starts direct. What parts of the engine do I need to check the growned cable on that can couse this irritating problem? I have 2x three year old batteries that are fully charged.
As soon as the engine starts if works like a dream.

Best regards // Jan

Do the obivous first, check the battery connections and clean the battery heads.
Check the battery switch. Check the engine kill switch. If all good, check all your spark plug cables and wire connectors (inside of that plastic thing goes on the plug).

Your problem sounds like a rusted out wire.

Sounds like you need a new set of spark plug wires... the marine type. These are inexpensive and easy to replace.

Jan,

If I understand correctly, your engine turns over but won't start unless you remove a spark plug wire from one of the spark plugs and then insert an extra spark plug into the removed wire and touch the plug ground to the block. Then the engine starts. Is this correct? If so, do you always remove the same spark plug wire, or will any of the 8 do the same? Once the engine starts, do you replace the spark plug wire onto the plug in the block? If you shut the engine off, will it restart?

You certain live in a beautiful city!
