Strange part in gear housing - Alpha 1

I dropped the lower unit today to check/change the impeller. As soon as I started to pull the unit down a metal pin fell on the ground.

I've checked the service manual and the exploded parts diagrams for both the gear housing and drive housing and do not see any reference to it. It's roughly 2 1/2 inches long with some notches/wear marks in it.

The best explanation I can come up with is that it's one of the alignment pins sometimes used to help align the water pump housing when reinstalling. It fits in the fastener holes just fine. It also fits in the oil galley between the upper and lower units, but I don't think there should be any reason for something to be in there.

Please help me identify this before I reassemble. At this point I would feel pretty confident leaving it out, but could use some reassurance.

Here is a picture of it next to the impeller key for size reference.

The upper part (rod) is the shutter pivot that belongs in the top of the exhaust Y, one on each side.
The lower picture is the key for the raw water pump impeller.

Thanks. Does that mean something is broke? What's required to put this part back in?

Well what do you know I looked up into the exhaust cavity on the outdrive and pulled out half of an exhaust shutter. What's the deal here? Do they tend to break? Looks like someone cut it in half with tin snips. Guess I get to check the exhaust shutters now. :(

You have the older style exhaust shutter. Be thankful it fell all the way through... Mine didn't and got caught in the bottom bend of the exhaust pipe. Sat there for a while and wore a hole in it... I was 30 miles out to sea when it started leaking....

I believe that there is a kit to put the newer style shutters onto your exhaust pipe. all you need to remove are the 2 exhaust elbows on the top of the manifolds. You should be doing that on a service anyway...

I got both exhaust elbows out to inspect the shutters. One side completely missing. The other side cut in half - matches up to the half piece I pulled out of the outdrive. Still can't figure that one out.

So then I figured I better pull the exhaust bellow and take a look. Found the other entire shutter sitting in the bottom. Happy I have all the parts out now. Time to source some more parts.

Man $55 each!!! That's crazy. What purpose do these serve anyhow? Just to keep water from backing up in the exhaust manifolds?

Gotta give a big THANKS to Don S for helping to identify the part! Without figuring that out I would have never checked the exhaust shutters. :)

Thanks Chris! I would like more info on the kit to upgrade the shutters. I see the two types in service manual. The newer type have slots in the exhaust pipes instead of holes to mount the shutter like the older style.

After checking further I guess they are priced in pairs, so ~$50 a pair. That's still a rip off, but doesn't feel as bad.
