This afternoon, I went on a short cruise, Solomons Island to Cove Point Light and return- Upon reaching Cove Point Lighthouse, I put my 1982 Sea Ray 260(5.7) 888 drive into a wide 180 degree turn to port at about 14 knots.

Entering the turn. mu fuel guage read just under 1/2 tank. Exiting the turn, I noticed it was almost on empty. Immediately checked the bilge - dry. No smell of fuel.

Slowed ddown to about 10 knots and headed home. No change in fuel level.

After about 20 minutes the fuel level began climbing and went back to about 3/8 tank.

At no time did any of the guages, fuel, temp, tach, or alternator fluctuate or give any unusual dips or jumps.

Any Ideas?

Re: Strange!!!

Just the obvious - check and clean the connections to the sender and guage.

Might also check the sender to make sure it is not hanging up physically.

if your sender is easily accessible couldnt hurt to pull it and inspect. ahh no smoking. try and keep your potential the same as the tanks, use a static strap or touch it constantly.

For more info on how what makes a fuel guage work go to this link:

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/fuel-gauge1.htm

Sure, it's about car guages but they are almost, if not identical. You'll find that these guages are just about always wrong.

My guess, same as Jack L .. sound like a sender or a float hanging up.
