I have a 2002 Volvo 3.0GX in my monterey. I recently started using my boat in the Pacific (Only about 8 times over the past 7 months). I've noted a severe corrosion/electrolosis problem on my out drive. This corrosion is getting notably worse after each visit to the ocean. My anodes are in order and the grouding wires are connected properly.

My prop(not stainless) is nearly trashed. The blades are about 20% corroded. The seams of the outdrive have about a once centimeter area of exposed metal that is also corroded.

I think I found the source of the stray current, do you agree??

A bolt behind my alternator, which is about one inch from my engine has obvious electrical arching damage and the engine in the area has the same type of damage. (No lose wiring is evident)

Aside from being a major fire/exsplosion hazard could this also be the cause of my electrolosis/corrosion damage.

Is this a design defect? Should my warrenty cover outdrive repair costs?

Sorry about the long post!

bgrov,

I wouldn't be so fast to condem your alternator. If it is arcing it is because it has no place, or a poor one, for the current to go.

Some connection somehere has high resistance.

I would start by looking at the negative battery cable. Especially at the engine end. Most likely it is loose or badly corroded. Don't trust your eyes. Remove the cable from the engine block and clean the entire area, including the cable lug.

Also, you may want to check with a dealer to see if the outdrive is supposed to have a ground strap from the outdrive to the engine block.
