I noticed that the belt on my IL6 mercruiser is loose but I can't adjust it anymore.

In one of bondo's replies to another post he wrote:

The Belt is, Mercruiser Part # 57-49043A1

Is there a cross reference to an automotive belt? Might make it easier to obtain....

Thanks.......

Tony,

Probably best to take it in to an auto parts store and get a comparison. They can measure them.

Buy a couple slightly shorter. You can always return the unused one. Make note of the part number of the one that fits best.

Like DJ said, try an auto parts store. I get my MerCruiser belts thru Napa. They carry a line called Sierra I believe that are the marine versions. They can cross reference that Merc part number for you.

I gotta ask, whats the difference between an 'auto' belt and a 'marine' belt?

Aldo

And the price!

I've just replaced the belts (2) on my 4.3. Merc genuine: over $100. Bosch auto : $24. And they are exactly the same.

Even if they only last half the time I'm still waaaay ahead.

Chris...........

Went down to boat tonight to remove old belt. Found it to be quite narrow, seated deeply into the water pump pulley. Took it down to AutoZone for a new one and brought a spare pulley with me to get a better fitting one. I got a thicker and shorter (1.5") belt.

I know the noise I heard was the belt squealing. I am hoping it was slipping badly causing some of my overheating problems!

Will keep you posted...

Hi Tony,
Most commonly used belts these days are 3/8" wide for auto use with some older applications being 1/2" wide.
If your belt is correct for the pulley and the pulley is not seriously worn, the top of the belt should be nearly flush or slightly proud of the outer diam of the pulley.
If the belt is way down below in the groove then something is not matching.
A belt at the bottom of the groove wont have much grip at all.

Peter
