And popping the top of the drive off won't tell you a thing, as the the shifting is all in the lower, and all internal. And knowing those as well as I do, chances are you have lower unit issues.
What do you think my plan of attack should be on this? I have a book on the way but folks with experience are always much more helpful then a book for trouble shooting

EDIT: a lil more info, I went out and had my wife turn the prop back and forth while I pulled the shift cable inside the boat. I was able to get it into gear but as I am told in forward it should lock clockwise and ratchet counter clock wise and vise versa. The cable moves nice and smooth both ways.
The prop is just locked and wont spin either direction. The boat is off and there are no muffs on at this time. Should I muff it up, start it and set it to a low idle, THEN pull the shift cable to try and get it into gear and out again or will that damage anything?
