The trim works to the best of my knowledge, at least..When i press the trim buttons i can hear it working. I'm not familiar with this style of "engine tilt" set up, but it really doesn't seem to do anything on the water. Ive played with it many times and it doesn't seem to change anything. Not sure how they behave, What happens when it reaches maximum tile in one direction, does it just hit a "lock" and not move any further, or does it continue to move far beyond proper limits? Not sure if I am supposed to just touch the trim bit by bit or hold it for a few seconds.

it should not lock, it should move up and down as you use the switches. Open the engine cover and watch the engine move up and down.

It does indeed move beyond normal limits.
When you trim in the bow should plow the water so hard that it is difficult to steer, when you trim out fully, the prop will start to ventilate.
It has that much range when working correctly.

I think they all have the sender on them too, so an optional trim position gauge can be hooked up

Re: stringer 400 trim

thanks for the info.

so what happens if i hold it too long in one direction, does it have a 'limit' where it cant go further. Just out on the water pressing the trim both ways for several seconds at a time in both directions di not seem to alter the pitch of the boat or speed..BUT it is working (just confirmed, i can see the engine move up/down)

i guess that 'sweet spot' needs to be found. So the controls have + and - trim.. should i start out closer to + or - range of tilt? i feel a bit dumb asking this question but its baffling me as to why the trim has such little effect when i use it (which is why i asked if the trim possibly went way beyond proper limits..i don't want to hold it for fear of burning up the motor)

trim all the way in (down) for your holeshot, as the boat is coming up to speed, start trimming up until the boat starts to porpoise and then back it down just a touch

Re: stringer 400 trim

oddly there are no limit switches or slip clutch or anything, the motor just goes under load at each end if held. (basically the same as most any power trim system out there)
I watch the voltmeter on some noisier boats with no trim gauge- when I see the volts drop, I know I am at the end
