Stringer may be overheating & a lube question

Took the boat out this weekend after a long hiatus from the water (she was in the shop for about 6 weeks and came out more broke than she went in - long story), and found out a few things that are probably not working right. I just need a little help understanding what I'm doing.

At WOT we seemed to be overheating. Didn't seem to do that when I was just "puttin'." I'm sure a new impeller is in order, and I'll get one on order. However, if I plug the garden hose in while she's on the trailer (I have the fitting on the pivot point of the stern drive) does that push water through the engine regardless of the impeller? I don't think I should rev it to WOT without being in the water, but I should be able to see water ejecting out of the drive - correct?

I think I overfilled the upper gear case - or, I've got a seal on top that's not working right. I saw a good deal of oil on the surface of the water when we got back to the pier. The upper had a rubber "spaghetti" seal on it when I looked at it, but I don't see any seal on the outdrive cover (5 bolt outer cover). Any advice on what to look for there? (I'll empty the lube and see how much water got in too)

Had suspected, but confirmed that none of my gauges are working. Tach read 6000 RPM at WOT ... don't really think so:D Hit about 30MPH (by GPS), and she didn't want to plane easily. We were loaded with two adults, 1 teenager & 2 youngun's - not a crazy load, so it should have come out quicker. Trim's not working yet, I'm sure that's contributing to it. We'll worry about speed and coming out of the hole next year. I'm more concerned with the potential overheating and losing my gear case oil.

Thanks as always.

At WOT we seemed to be overheating.
grease the swivel bearing - probably sucking exhaust into the cooling water at higher rpm

for illustrations of seals, gaskets, etc. shop.evinrude.com has exploded views, part numbers, prices and oem availability

Re: Stringer may be overheating & a lube question

UPDATE: I greased the swivel bearing and took her out for a short run. Good news - I think my temp gauge is actually working! Bad news - I'm definitely overheating (ran between 190 & 220 after a short run at WOT). So, I'm ordering the impeller for the ole' stringer.

There is a significant price difference between the GLM and the Sierra (almost $50): is there a difference between them that I should know before buying one?

Also, I got the impression that they might be more difficult to change than I originally thought. Is this something that someone with moderate mechanical skills can handle fairly easily?

moderate skills are all that is required. I would go with an OEM impeller, available from any Evinrude dealer for $40. 0379475 IMPELLER
