Stringer Replacement

Hey there. Been reading a lot in this forum and it seems like a number of stringers have been replaced. Mine were mud, and I "fixed" it with some polyuritane adhesive and epoxy resin. I know, i know, its not fixed at all. What would it take to replace them? the whole floor needs to come up? also its a coverd bow (19" sea ray runabout) where the fuel tank is, its not easy to get in there. Do they run all the way up there, and does that need to be opened up? Then i assume you basicly frabricate a new deck from scratch.

Thanks

Re: Stringer Replacement

Just in the middle of a stringer project. You basically have to remove the floor, cut out the old stringer, and install the new one. My 18 foot had 12' long stringers, so I imagine that your are 12 to 14 feet long. If your stringers are shot, so may your transom, and probably the floor. I do not believe that you will have to seperate the top from the hull. There is lots of info about how to do this project in this forum.

Good Luck, and I am sure you will have fun.

Re: Stringer Replacement

I am in the middle of stringer replacement also. If your fuel tank is just under the covered bow sitting on a "box", I think you would have to remove the tank and box as well.

Here you can see I have cut away the floor to reveal the stringers which go under the fuel tank mounting area(triangular cut out). So to get to the stringers I had to remove everything.

This is just before I started really getting into the grinding of the poly resin and fiberglass that were part of poor refit job done previously.

Re: Stringer Replacement

THanks guys, that pic looks EXACTLY like mine. after the stringers are replaced, i assume the floor is 1/2" plywood. then you resin over that with mat? also, on top of that do you have to do carpet or has anyone seen flooring (mahogony or Ipe) Or would that jsut add unnessasary weight.

Re: Stringer Replacement

I don't use carpet anymore. The stuff just gets wet, holds water and eventually rots. Last time I redid the flooring, I mixed crushed walnut shells with some marine enamel and rolled it on. Non skid, easy to wash and keep clean. That is what is on the floor in this pic.
