Re: stringer replacment

raise them off the hull iwth 1/4" dowels or popsicle sticks. Bed them in PB (thickened resin) or PL premium polyurethane based construction adhesive. brace them with a 2x4 screwed into the sides to keep them vertical

yep....

the strings need to be just a tad off the hull......the above popsicle sticks work well.

some like the p; construction adheasive.......i don't, due to the long cure times before you can glass over it......but for a home builder that might bed the stringers...then wait a week to glass them ......its ok

Hope this is not considered hijacking but I think it is a relavant question when replacing stringers.

Question:

Does the deck need to be kept off the hull the same as the stringers?

Re: stringer replacment

Trooper, the deck is supported by the stringers and does not need to be lifted off of them at all. In addition, there will be a gap between the sidewall of the hull and the deck, filled with PB

Ok Zak, i was thinking the farthest edges of the deck where it meets the hull would also need to be suspended. If this was the case then stringers would be the way it is lifted.

Re: stringer replacment

Since I am undergoing this same process in my Glasply, are there any good videos or pictures demonstrating this? I've found a few on videos on youtube that generalize the process but I understand the gapping is very important. I'm a few weeks out yet from having to worry about it but I want to be fully prepared when I'm ready.

Check out the Videos by Friscoboater, he has some excellent ones of him rebuilding 2 different boats.

I wonder about this as well...my deck seemed to be supported by the hull at the port/starboard edges...

Re: stringer replacment

the deck sits on the stringers or frames......the out side edge of the deck.... kinda sits in space as it reaches to the outside edge of the hull......

then we add peanut butter in the slight gap between the hull and deck......then ....layers of csm and 1708 tabbing hold the deck to the hull.

when its done....you can stomp, jump and hammer on the deck ....no worries....

dont worry about a hard joint in the deck hull edge....(if the deck touches the hull) it is of little conncern.....the closer you can get to the hull...the better....if you can make it touch, and fit......like a countersunk screw......all the better.

+1 ^^^^ I was somewhat worried myself I had always assumed it rod on the hull, in like 2 places the hull was foam-free because the deck was "touching it", that makes me feel a little more confident! just when I think I got it figured out, something makes me question myself lol

You see posts from oops! above. Read his hull extension thread. You'll be very knowledgeable before you even start.

Re: stringer replacment

Go to U-Haul and purchase a 4x8 sheet of cardboard. (Cheap less than 5 bucks). Movers use em to protect the floor when moving stuff. Then cut it into strips approximately the height of your stringers. Drill a hole the size of a pencil in a small 2x2 piece of wood and insert a pencil. Place the Cardboard in the approximate location of the stringer and then use the block of wood with the pencil to scribe the cardboard with the shaped of the hull. Run string lines across the width of the hull to determine the height of the stringers at both ends and then connect the dots.
