Anyone have any suggestions on how to remove striping on my boat that I am sure is original (18 years old) and is faded and checked. Razor blades just seem to gouge the fiberglass no matter how careful you are. Tried a pnuematic tool with an eraser wheel on it and just melted and smeared it.

Re: Striping Removal

Salsmanship, I just recently removed all of the striping on a 1989 Maxum 21 Foot Cuddy and it had quite a bit on it ! The way that I found was the most efective without causing damage to the gel coat was using a heat gun and being very careful to control the heat. Too close and the striping melts but if you find the right amount of heat you will find that it removes it quite quickly, helps to have an assistant I found.

Then when it is all removed I used a spray on adhesive remover to get the gum off that is left behing. Although I found that I ended up using more of a Urethane reducer for automotive paint and that proved to be more effective and did not harm the gel coat.

Good Luck

Heat gun works wonders---if you are a little leary of the heat gun or having trouble controlling the heat try a hair dryer--- sometimes and I mean sometimes thats just enough heat to soften the adhesive so you can use a PLASTIC scraper to get it off then clean up like the guys said with solvent. If you want, when you get the stripe off, run 2" masking tape along each side of the remaining adhesive before you use the solvent and that will keep you from smearing the stuff all over. Or just be carefull. Those stripe removal wheels really work well but you should move on to an new spot as soon as the stripe comes off-- don't really try to get all the adhesive off with the wheel---that's why it was probably gumming up.

I have always used heat but today i was removing the stripes on my new project boat and found out by accident that the pressure washer peels them right off if you get it about a 45 degree angle they just peel away:D

Use a heat gun and a plastic scraper. Be careful not to get it too hot. I used brake cleaner to remove the adhesive. This worked great on my boat.

Good luck

Re: Striping Removal

most any car part store carried the pinstripe removal wheel(layered rubber wheel), it can be placed on any drill and it works wonders, I have removed several stripes from boats, and hundreds from cars, and have never had any paint or finishing damage, even took off one once on an S-10 truck, if you remember the ones with the shaded stiping from the top of the door to the bottom, basically covering the whole side of the truck. after using the wheel, goo gone works excellent on getting the remaining glue off.

Re: Striping Removal

I found out the hard way when I was removing some bottom paint that the previous owner put on way to high that Ready Strip Marine will take the decals off if you let it sit for a couple of minutes with no sticky residue behind. So, now I have to replace decals, which were in bad shape anyway.
