Stripped Thread - Drain Plug

The thread on my Yamaha 4 hp 4 stroke [2008] outboard, into which the drain plug is screwed, appears to be stripped. How easy is it going to be to have it re-threaded? Also, thinking about costs, how long should it typically take an engineer to do the job?

Thanks

depends.
an engineer isnt gonna fix it, they only design stupid stuff.
if its accesible simply drill it and heli coil it with the correct drill and heli coil.

Re: Stripped Thread - Drain Plug

I am an Engineer, and I can fix it.

However Rodbolt is right, the majority of Engineers would not be able to make the proper repairs. It?s the things that I learned prior to Engineering school and what I?ve learned on this forum that would allow me to make the repairs.

Because this is a drain plug I would be very careful using thread inserts, they might work fine but I would increase the frequency when checking the fluids.

If possible I would attempt to find the next size (up) of drain plug, using the correct size drill bit I would drill out the damage threads, followed by a fresh tap and cut new threads into the housing.

If room does not permit this operation, then I would go with the heli coil method.

Good luck
