Stubborn oil filter and torque specs

Changed oil filter in spring. Hand tightened, but when I ran the engine I had a slight leak so I gave it a no more than a 1/4 turn with a wrench. Now I can't get the damn thing to budge. It's been bugging me so I want to change it. I tried a 74/76 mm but struggle to grip the filter, even tried putting a runner glove around it. Tried a runner strap wrench, nothing. Any other ideas or tips?

In the service manual I have noticed torque specs on bolts that you can only get with a crescent wrench ( ie power steering hoses). How do you torque those...do they make a crescent torque wrench or is it a reference for feel?

Thanks in advance!

all those PS attachments are installed by "feel" . Never use a wench to tighten any type of filter , hand tight or there is another issue. So be that as it may, you can use a chain wrench strap tool, and if this is a remote filter assembly, remove it as a unit, apply heat to where the rubber ring is and use a oil filter wrench to unscrew it

It isn't a remote filter. One of the main issues is just getting a good grip on it to try to twist it off and twisting it on.

I think I'm going to try the pliers next. Fingers crossed I dont have to stab the current filter.

The pliers that Grub posted WILL remove it, but it is going to be messy. I've had to use those exact same ones on a previous boat. A gorilla apparently installed it, and there was no way it was coming out without at least some holes in it.

With the wrench try and grab the filter as close to the base as you can to remove it.

I also put anti-slip tape on the filter before installing it so I can get a good grip on it when removing.

Spray adhesive on the filter and strap helps

Greasing the filter o-ring helps

Using a good quality Wixx filter helps

Not yet...I will let everyone know when I get it off. Stupid rain limits ability to mess with it.

Sometimes it does get messy. I usually get a good grip with them and give it steady constant pressure, if you jerk it, the filter will get ripped. They always get bent, but who cares, it's junk anyway.

Run the engine for 30 minutes to get the oil all the way up to temperature. It will loosen the filter some.

The correct way to torque stuff you can’t get a socket on is to use a crows foot at 90 degrees to the torque wrench.
