i was taking apart one of my carbs to clean it and find that the .074 jet is now stuck. it appears that the groove to fit screwdriver has been worn away, so i'm not sure what to do with it. I have a new jet on the way, so I was thinking about trying to drill it out. if anybody has had this happen before, please let me know how you approached it. I appreciate any suggestions.

Re: stuck carb jet

Take the best fitting screwdriver you have for the job and go to your bench grinder. Make the end flat with very sharp square edges leading off the flanks of the blade.

You need to have it get a secure bite in what's left of the jet.

You might try heating the unit in maybe boiling water or about that warm. Although I'll usually forego the heating process you might need all the odds in your favor if you have allready rounded out the slot.

Use great downpressure in a direct angle to the jet while turning. If you have sharply squared off your driver you will hear it peeling away brass from the jet's groove or it will start coming.

I don't believe you will be successfull in drilling it out but as a last resort it may give you some relief while you wait for the new carb to arrive.

Just went through this problem also.
I assume that your jet is brass. Dang Brass has a real habbit of siezing.

Finally had to resort to drilling it out.
WHAT A PAIN! Broke off an Eazy-Out in the jet. As the brass is so SOFT, the Eazy-Out, distorted the jet adding to the seizing. Went trough 6 or 8 End-Mills and Drill bits drilling out the broken Eazy-Out.

The good news was, by the time i got the broken Eazy-Out, OUT, the remaining shell of the jet came out too.

If you've got to drill it, see if you can find "Left Handed" drill bits. Start will small bits and work your way up. Eventually, one of the bits will grab the jet and back it out.

If you have a Drill Press or Mill to work on, Chuck/Clamp up the carb too maintain alignment with the drill.

Take ALL NECCESSARY TIME.

Good Luck!

Re: stuck carb jet

thanks for the help guys...actually i finally just got an ez-out, tapped it into the jet a few times, and it screwed it right out. REALLY suprised me how easy it was especially for all the trouble having with this carb job but i'll take it as good luck. Thanks again
