Having a hard time getting my props off. I wanted to change the zinc behind the props but cant seem to get the nut loose. I soaked it for 2 days with oil and still no luck. When trying to loosen with a 1/2 drive 19mm socket and in forward gear..props want to turn..so blocked props with wood and broke socket!
Any advice?
Thanks
Lee

Re: Stuck Duo Prop

Recommended method is to place a piece of wood between the antiventilation plate and the props(s).

Remember to remove any locking tabs/devices from the nut before attempting to remove it.

Next problem may be to slide off the props from the shaft

Add a good layer of marine grease when reassembling to make any future work on these parts a piece of cake,

Re: Stuck Duo Prop

hello
lee
block the props with a wood block.
use an impact socket if it will fit. make sure your turning the bolt to the left to loosen it.
that bolt is supposed to torque to 25 foot pounds. the black cone torques to 80 ft pounds.
there will be one of two propnuts on the fwd prop. one has many flats and a multi-fingered tab washer that the tabs are bent over or 2 it will have a 3 tabbed nyloc style nut. the 3 tab nyloc needs a special tool to remove without damaging it.
be aware that volvo douprops that are aluminium in saltwater will stick to the shaft in as little as 30 days . even when yamma lube grease is used.it is due to aluminum hubs and stainless shafts. if they stick cut them off carefully with a side grinder. takes me about 4 4 1/2 discs and an hour a prop. the inner shaft is about $360 on the counter. the outer shaft is about $1100 on the counter with no seals or bearings or labor. dont cut them or hammer them.
good luck and keep posting
