greetings
anybody have an easy way to retrieve an exhaust flapper that has blown out and is stuck in the bottom y of the exhaust. The boat runs fine but sometimes i can hear a rattle at a certain rpm and i know its the flapper.
1993 wellcraft 4.3 merc alpha 1

If you can hear the flapper, it's still where it should be, the rubber is just burned off. Pull the riser, elbow, and other hoses so you can acces the top of the exhaust Y. That is where the flappers (shutters) are. If they have broken the shaft and are at the bottom of the exhaust Y, just pull the drive and you can see through the exhaust bellows to the bottom of the Y. Use hooks or what ever is necessary to drag the old shutters out of there. Also check inside the exhaust passages of the drive.

If you don't want to pull the drive, wonder if you could catch it edgewise with one of those 2' long flexible "grabbers" you can pick up at WalMart, Dollar Genral, etc (cost about $1). They have a button at the top that opens a 4 pronged 'grabber' at the bottom. When you release the button the wire grabbers close pretty tightly....

Might require some fishing, though, and you'd still have to be able to pull it back up without it getting loose....
