i have a 1971 merc outboard 80 hp. took it out yesterday, and when i was coming in, may have tried to put it into reverse to quickly, slipped right past neutral, and reverse and stayed in drive. now i cant seem to get it out of drive. push the lever forward(throttles in drive) pull the lever back(throttles in drive) any suggestions?

Re: STUCK in drive

My 1st guess would be a broken shift cable. Disconnecet it at the motor and see if you can shift the motor into neutral by hand. Take the key out of the ingition switch first.

also check the linkage to the shift rod. I had one break on my motor once. The cable and shifter worked fine, but it didn't change anything. Got to looking harder and found it was just slipping around the rod. Replaced it and no more problems

checked linkage to shift rod, looks like part of it broke, cable and shifter are fine. going to repalce that linkage and hope that it takes care of the problem. thanks for the input.
