stuck in gear problem

wondering if someone could help me with my newly found problem. i've got a '82 or '83 50hp mercury. first time out this year, and it wouldn't shift into gear then i rev'ed it up and it shifted into forward and seemed to get stuck there now forward goes forward and reverse goes forward any help is appreciated.

Just a guess but have you had the lower unit off recently???? as in before this became a problem?

well i've had the prop and shaft out of there.

Sounds like you may have installed something back in backwards...I do that all the time..The reason I asked was because sometimes when you drop the lower unit off the motor for impeller service or replacement, sometimes you can knock the shift mechanism off and cause some really nice things to occur

i had the prop assembly out but didn't do any thing in there if that helps any.
