Stuck in Reverse

So I changed the impeller in my lower unit and now the boat is stuck in reverse. It is a 1971 165hp Mercruiser io Reinell RV-1920. If I push in the button on the panel mounted control and push the control forward, the drive will shift into reverse. I am sure the lower unit was most likely in reverse and the control was in fwd when I put the lower unit back on. I am hoping someone can tell me how to adjust the shift linkage without removing the lower unit again. The boat usually stays where it is now, in the water.

The shift control cable goes to a sort of round cam like rotating device that has a switch that appears to operate when the control is placed in reverse. There is a second cable attached to this mechanism that operates a switch that closes when the control is in fwd. I don't see where the shifting action makes it through the transom and to the lower unit.

Can someone explain?

Re: Stuck in Reverse

Sorry, but the lower needs to be dropped again. control box in fwd, lower splined shift turned fully clockwise, raise lower unit just enough to catch the foward stud by 2 turns, start side nuts, slide lower brass shoe onto splined shaft keeping shoe in a straight line, push unit up and tighten side nuts MAKING SURE the shoes stay lined up.
