stuck in reverse

hello,
I have a 1971 or 73 50 hp johnson. Unfortunately, it was stuck only in reverse until I cut two solenoid wires and now it only has forward. Does this sound like a switch or a solenoid problem? If it is a switch, I assume it is in the control box. And is it possible to fix by cleaning it up? The "boat mechanic" at a local boat place here in San Diego couldn't find a new switch and I dont think he really knows what it is. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am new to boats (and new to this board) so excuse my apparent outboard stupidity.

Thanks in advance,
dingo

Dingo,

I THINK these "electroshifts" were designed to default to forward if there was an electrical failure. If it shifted, I would think the solonoid is OK. Besides the switch is A LOT easier to get to.

Re: stuck in reverse

To test the integrity of both solenoids, supply power to both while running. This should give you reverse. If you have reverse, the solenoids are good. Power only one and you have nuetral.
:)

Make sure you are using the correct lower unit oil. It takes Premium blend Type "C". Not your Wallyworld special.

Arlan

Thanks for your responses! I'll give that a shot. Oh yeah, by the way, does anyone know where or who carries or can locate old 1971 solenoids or switches for my 50hp johnson?
Thanks
Dingo
