stuck lower unit

I have a 96 Evinrude 90hp. Attempting to service lower unit. Removed everything as per service manual but unit wont come out completely. It drops a 4 inches. Seems like shift rod stuck. Thanks for your time.

You did remove the screw at the top of the shift rod, correct?

The manual did not mention a screw. Its stated to disconnect shift linkage, trim tab, all bolts. I will have a closer look.

That screw goes through the hole in the top of the shift rod, which is in this diagram

By the way, which manual are you using? I'm betting it's not the actual OMC factory service manual.


EDIT: It appears the links don't take you directly to the subassembly diagram like they used to. Go to www.shop2.evinrude.com and select your year and model. Then go to the "cylinder and cranckase" section to see the screw I'm referring to.

If you are having trouble getting the lower unit off, Just think 0f the fun you will have putting it back on. Good luck.
