Hi,long time reader first time poster.i have just bought a 1998 regal 5.7 with a volvo sx outdrive.i wanted to replace the belllows and gimbal bearing.i cannot get the two apart from the pivot housing and the upper outdrive.i seen on here where someone said to undo the hinge pins and push them apart that way.however i dont understand how to do this.i have it on a engine hoist right now and the drive shaft is still in it .do i just pull on it (it seems a little tight and i didnt want to hurt any thing important)also it seems that it has a build up of jb weld around the center where it should separate and has a hole in it just below the middle bolt on the starbord side.if i can get it apart ill see if thats a problem or not.it has come from florida till i got it and am in indiana.i do have a book and following it but am stuck now.thanks in advance

Not sure I'm following what you are trying to do. Do you have some pictures of what you have hanging on an engine hoist?

thanks,i have the outdrive itself, hooked it with a 1/2" bolt like the book said to from the dipstick and unhooked everything else (trim cylinders) and have it 2 feet from the boat with the pivot housing stilll on the upper part of the outdrive.shes stuck.i read where you used the studs or something to act as a puller dont quite see it in my head .will get picture shortly thanks!

Re: stuck pivot housing and outdrive

heres a picture, this thing is 400.00!!!!i seen a picture on ebay and it might not be where water will get in it,i would still like to know how to use the studs to get it apart, also what about that drive shaft.turns out the gimbal bearing is good and greased, however i must have pulled the seal some how cause the little metel o ring usually found on the inside of the seal is now outside of the seal and inside the shaft housing on the boat..dang manboat.jpg

Re: stuck pivot housing and outdrive

Hate to be the one to tell you this, but by removing those 6 locknuts (3 on each side) the drive should have slid off the pivot housing. It's corroded on from salt water, and never being removed.
I just ran into one of those last year. I will use your picture to show you what I did. Just give me a few minutes to mark the picture up.

Re: stuck pivot housing and outdrive

The pivot housing on the front of the outdrive has to come off. Right now, from the looks of it, it's been in salt water and no service for a long time. if you look close around the studs that go through the outdrive from the pivot housing, you will find them full of white corrosion. That takes years.
I spent a month soaking the studs with daily doses of PB blaster, and a couple other penetrating oils with no success at all. Nothing even moved. Then I turned to heat. BIG heat with Oxy/Act torch, almost to the melting temp of the housing (in the areas shown in red in the picture below and on both sides) plus a big hammer and a brass drift on the studs to eventually work the pivot housing off the outdrive. It was that or it would never come apart.
I did have to replace all the studs, did a lot of painting, resealed the upper plus all the other things that needed fixed prior to the disassembly problem.
Fins on the drive can be replaced by a good welder, but you have a ways to go to get to that point.

Here is a link to the OEM service manual you can download. You REALLY need to read it.

Re: stuck pivot housing and outdrive

while i was awaiting further instructions i went back out to the outdrive and looked at the book,i believe i will be able to remove driveshaft and repair bellows IF AND WHEN i get this apart.i bought this from florida knowing it would have issues from the salt .i guess this is one of them.ironicaly it did not have water in the oil or any other obvious problems ,i just wanted to do the preventive maintance thing and got my self in a mess!however had i not done this and something happen i would have been kicking myself --why didnt i just check it out before i ruined a 4000.00 outdrive.

You haven't ruined an outdrive yet.
When you heat it and get some movement, let things cool down before the second attempt. Don't just keep heating till you overheat everything. Yeah, it may take a while (days even) to get it loose. but it also took years to get stuck like that.

Re: stuck pivot housing and outdrive

just a thank you for replying,i will throw the heat to it tomorrow and take my time with it.it looks like it was built up with a steel weld of some sorts all around the mating of the two.it must of worked pretty good because it didnt leak.if i can get it apart ill do the same.but im starting to think that sacrificing the pivot housing and putting a new (used)one on might be cheap insurance.once again THANK YOU.

Re: stuck pivot housing and outdrive

I GOT IT!!! i heated up the casting and wedged chisles in between the two and comenced a beating.6 hours later it gave up before i did.2 questions .1 when i pulled the out drive off about 2 cups of gear oil ran out of the drive bellows.should i tear it down further and replace the seal.is this about normal or should i replace the pinion seal?is it a unbolt and bolt back or do i need to be exact with tolerance.2 it had something like jb weld between them to make up for about 3/8 gap at the top and a little down the sides.i would like to put something like this back as it was easily broke with a screwdriver and hammer.not realy hard like jb weld.does anyone know what that is?is it a common trick around the dock.i wouldnt want to prevent me from getting back in here if i need to. many thanks for your help..
