Hey Guys ....
I have a carbed 1987 I/O Ford 351w, and can't seem to resolve these 2 issues.
Issue #1:
We were out on the boat over labor day weekend .... Boat was running beautifully, when all of a sudden, out of the blue going 25-30mph, starter starts to engage randomly .... We immediately brought the boat speed down and the boat cut out. We go to start her back up, same thing happens, so we pull the starter, so we can atleast limp back to the dock.
We figured it was the starter solenoid, so we replaced that and all seemed great. Did a fake lake for 10-15 minutes, ran great, took her back out on the lake, ran good for a little while, shut her down to pick up tubers, go to start back up, and the same issue happens all over again. Starter stays engaged and won't disengage.
We get back to the dock, trailer her up, and drive home. We test everything ... Terminals, both Ignition and Starter .... Thought we may have a bad ignition lock since we could pull the key and engine would continue to run. Replaced it, now it leads to issue #2.
Issue #2:
Seeing as the new starter solenoid did the exact same thing as the old starter solenoid, we popped the old one back on, changed the ignition lock, and went to fire her up to see if the starter would continue to engage. Only this time around, we can't get her to fire. She sounds like she wants to turn over but won't. I see 12.57v at the starter solenoid, so there should be plenty of juice to turn over, its just not happening.
Thoughts guys? Starter is somewhat new ... Only about a year old with likely less than 10-20 hours on her.
I plan to pull the starter to get it bench tested ... Do you feel it could be anything else?
Thanks!

EDIT: Other Notes:
1) Battery Terminal Lead from Battery to Starter Solenoid gets AWFULLY hot after just a few cranks trying to start up.
2) Terminals all look clean, free of debris, etc....
