hey guys its been a week since i got back from my fishing trip in the keys( 5days). I launched the boat the other day to do a little fishing and the steering was locked up. We broke it a little bit with me turning the wheel and a buddy pushing the top of the motor, but was still very very hard to turn.

so on my free day i started diagnosing the problem, i thought it was the cable or tube was stuck. I disconnected the steering from the motor and the steering turns freely as I greaased the snot out of it before the trip. BUT the motor does not was to move from side to side when disconnected. I did froget to grease my steering shaft bushings before the trip. so now im afraid its corroded. How Can I breake it loose, any methods or suggestions?

Been soaking the bushings as well as possible with pb blaster. Me and buddy got it turned to one side literally with all our strength and a hammer beating the steering ram. And couldnt get it back the other way because of a poor angle to hit with a hammer

Ive read on other threads to use a 50/50 mixture of acetone and trnasmission fluid for really corroded items maybe this will work for you. Good luck.

Re: stuck steering shaft on 50 johnson

Alright guys I unhooked all the cable and lines to get a good clearing to wack the steering arm on the mid section. I broke it loose a little then reattached the steering assembly and worked it side to side with the steeringwheel about thirty times and its extremely tuff to turn, def not driveable.

So I decidedto do it the right way. Took off the lower unit, no prob. Then the powerhead(Fu@S@#$D!mn) thats all I got to say about that, three bolts I had to pop the head and luckky worked them out with vice, but one OOO the one was a b!tch and still a little ppiece stuck in the powerhea.

Can any one give me some knowledge about part #63. Is it one solid shaft( thats what I can tell ) or is it two peices ( how it looks in the diagram) I dont see any snap rings in the diagram holding it in. does it just drive out the casing upwards. anyone done this removal.

Many years ago in a land far far away (south florida), we would use a small bottle jack or floor jack with a piece of wood between tube and jack. Use GENTLE pressure, may be necessary to use a little heat.

Got me confused not hard to do but you did it.The crowley schematic is for a 2002 40HP and you state yours is a 50HP What is the real year and HP?
I'm looking at BPR and it shows in your schematic #76 as a screw at BPR it shows its a screw through the thrust ring

Re: stuck steering shaft on 50 johnson

i got a 2002 50hp J50plsnf .. I removed the grease fittings and the one screw on the top port side, and the allen screw on the starboard side. I supposed its not going to just slide out since its corroded.

the jack method was my next approach, or im thinking about dismounting the stern brackets and working off the boat. I was thinking it may be easier to hold it by hand and slam it on some wood over the concrete to break it loose.

Re: stuck steering shaft on 50 johnson

on ebay the whole steering arm assemble in bolt on condition is 150. Im debating because both my trim pins are froze, and really dont want the spend hours trying to loosen them. I might pull out the damn angle cutter and cut out the two pins to salvage them for the new assembly. the pins are like 120 for the both if i mushrrom them.

To get it serviced around here they want 400. I can get the who assembly and new head gasket and impeller for half the price.

Its a one piece shaft.Maybe get a pan that will fit it and soak it in the tranny fluid and aceitone for a couple days. Then try twisting and pulling at the same time.Line a cardboard box with plastic?? test it to make sure the aceitone doesnt melt it.The parts you mention are the way to go.Myself I would try everything else first who knows a soak may do the trick.

Re: stuck steering shaft on 50 johnson

Alright I unmounted the transom to remove the mid section. the pins are stuck horribly. i mushroomed the end so I just cut the pin into three peices to remove transom mounts. I used a jig saw. The pins are still stuck though, my trim seals are shot and need serviced. I want to get it fixed then remount with some bolts instead of the pins.

not sure how to remove the pins im lookin to get someone to do that part of the job. im just not experienced in that type of removal. I can do all the other work. im sure I could do this but not to sure how to do it without further damage to the trim and transom.
ohh yea I got the bolt out of the power head, I cut intoit with the dremel then backed it out with a flat head
