Guys,

Need some direction

I have a issue with the boat omc 5.8 1989 the starter is stuck engaged.

new on boat
Starter
Distrib
points etc

my question is this

What do I check to track this down? The boat tries to start as soon as I turn on my Battery switch no key etc
In Neutral or in gear???? Could it be a bad Coil?

Thanks

Don

First, make sure its wired up right. Then check the solenoid, and lastly check the switch.

It was starting fine then all of a sudden it started acting up like it did before I replaced the starter.
I think the problem never went away but maybe a result of a faulty Alternator? Is that possible? Or Coil? But the odd thing is while it was engaged one time I turned batteries off and it still cranked???

Thanks

Is this a single engine unit? I assume so
If it is a twin then you need to do some serious wiring checks

If it is single,
#1 disconnect starter cable at solenoid
#2 turn on battery and check for power where you disconnect starter cable
#3 If powered when battery on Key off continue to disconect wires on solenoid small ones first one at a time check starter connection after removing each wire
#4 if just the battery supply cable to solenoid is the only one connected and the starter connection still has power then the solenoid is at fault
#5 If no power at starter connection Battery cable still connected small wires disconnected then problem is either in wiring harness or you wired it improperly

Hope this helps

Honestly if sounds like you are in way over your head. A faulty alternator or coil has absolutely nothing to do with a starter engaging as soon as the batteries are turned on. I would recommend you take it to a marine mechanic to look at it for you, instead of you troubleshooting it yourself and possible burning up another starter.

I agree 100%

Problem is boat is in water at slip no way to get it to trailer to bring to OMC mechanic
I tried a mobile and that was a joke. The guy turned on batteries and instead of switching of he tried to grab battery post lol. I'm originally from oyster bay sure miss Long Island. so update

I replaced Solenoid assist ( no help)
Removed starter and had it tested all good so not that

I guess I need to check the ignition? Any thoughts?

Thanks

Re: Stuck

sorry to hear that you had no luck with the mobile mechanic. Could you possibly somehow have connected the positive cable directly to the starter? Or it's touching the starter? It's somehow getting power straight from the battery. Maybe you didn't connect the solenoid correctly? A constant positive cable is touching something it shouldn't be. Or the ignition switch could be faulty?

Re: Stuck

This should be very easy to run down with the simplest of tools.
Unhook everything(from the starter) and get a 12v test light/probe. And figure it out. It should take 5 minutes to isolate where the signal is coming from to tell the solenoid to engage.

Does all other electric work on the boat? Is the positive grounding and back feeding?

Re: Stuck

Hi All,

Well my new Solenoid assist was the culprit. Turned out to be faulty. Thanks to all for the assistance
