Stupid chair design...

Picked up a office chair yesterday from Ikea and assembled it last night. Nice chair, comfortable, fits my need. But I noticed that when I push the chair the caster wheels don't turn. I sit on the chair and they turn as I roll around, but stand up and they lock. So every time I move the chair, the wheels scuff my new floor! And unless the floor is perfectly flat, one or more wheels lock when your seated on it and roll. More scuffing!

Turns out the caster is designed to release a little brake shoe only when there is weight on it. No weight, no roll! I thought that was weird. So I take each caster off, pry the wheels apart (has that double wheel caster) and cut off the brake shoe from each side and re-assemble.

Now what is the point of having brakes on an office chair caster? Is someone afraid their chair will get away when they're not looking?

It sounds like a crazy idea. The only benefit might be when trying to sit down, if you catch the edge of the chair, maybe it wouldn't roll and you don't end up on the floor. Just a guess though.

California version, you know, earthquakes and all. Can't have chairs rolling down the streets of the business district.

Safety, its why they made lawn mowers to stop when ya let go the handle. Don't want ya to trim bushes with it  Any thing ya buy now a days seems to have ten pages on safety. Next they will have a seat belt for that chair :D

Re: Stupid chair design...

At our offices, people take chairs and switch them around. Whoever wants a more plush chair, they just take them. The brakes would work for our purpose, but other than that, it does not make any sense.

Bro: We had Ikea invade our space up here in Canada too. It is okay though, sometimes people call me and pay me to "put together" what ever they bought.
Now how stupid is that? These rich people go to Ikea and buy cheap stuff and then hire someone to assemble it for them.
Weird!

Mark, that would be the OSHA approved U.S. version of an office chair. Chief ;)

Could that be one of the group of chairs shipped to San Francisco which were built to earthquake standards? They were designed as not to shift around in the office when there is an after-hours 6.6 tremor. :D

I wouldn't be surprised if that clever little caster design added a buck or two to the cost of the chair. More money wasted, plus my time to "reverse engineer" it.

At least all the parts were in the box. :)

May that would be cool for chair distance races in the halls. You get out of control, just jump off and the brakes come on.

:D :D :D

You never had chair races before?

Ken

They did office chair races down main street couple of months ago. One in the chair and one pushing. I didn't watch it but the newspaper had some pictures in it, looked like a blast. I hope they do it again this year I will probably attend the races. :D

We had a freestyle contest on the loading dock this Spring the day after we got our new chairs. Caught some radical air, did some sweet grinds, pulled a hamstring... :D
