i sold one of my boats to a friend of mine earlier today. while he was here i told him he needs to check out iboats. i told him there was lots of good reading here, and to him make sure he checks out the stupid human tricks while boating, i remarked about some of the strange things people do. well he left and made it 2 blocks from my house, when he called me and said that the boat and trailer had came loose from his truck. luckily he had the chains hooked and nothing other than a little trailer paint was damaged. but he had to remark that i jinxed him by telling him to read these forums.

So... who hooked the trailer to the tow vehicle? I'm hoping he did... I always hook the trailer (boat, utility, etc) to my vehicles and have gotten into the habit of walking around both tow vehicle and trailer TWICE before starting out, backing down, launching, retrieving. Takes a little longer, but usually works. I did leave one of the two plugs out of my Carolina Skiff shortly after I got it, but other than that... (knock on wood)

I enjoy reading the SHT forum (as well as the others)... makes me realize that there is a LOT that I don't know...

i let him hook the trailer. i like to let the owner do it themselves thatway if there is trouble, it cant be blamed on me. when i hook up a trailer after latching it, ill pick up like crazy on the tongue to check it, if it is too heavy ill use the jack to put a little pressure on it. after i hit the road, when i make a stop i always do a walk around and look things over again

Oh MY God
I just came in to this thread to tell what happend to me. I was going to post about this exact thing.
I was in a hurry becouse finaly the Coho were finaly running. Put the hitch on the ball and locked it with a paddle lock. As my wife and I were going down the highway the hitch came off. No damage as the safty chains were hooked up and worked as thay should have. BUT still scared the crap out of us and the people behind us.

I've had everything there is to happen with a trailer to me...except loose a wheel.
I've gotten into the habt of double checking the hookup and lights.

Re: stupid human tricks forum is cursed

i generlly loose one off the ball once a year or so...........some times the cheap hitch mechanism just fails...(our roads can be really bumpy).....my buddie hooked the bayliner up the other day.....i didnt check it....and lost it just a few blocks from the starting point..........the safety chains are really a must :D

years ago i bought a little 16 footer and didnt realize my ball hitch was too small.....i was bringing it home across a bridge in kelowna......(the one and only) and the chains snaped when it came off the ball....(the chains were rusted......it thought it will be ok....its just till i get her home)

i was really lucky as the trailer veered to the curb side.....the tounge hit the high curb and the wheel was also touching the curb.......it acted as a brake and the trailer just slowed and stopped.......the cars behind the trailer had to swerve .....i just about killed a few dozen people that day........so i allways double check the hitch/ball.....except when i dont hitch it.....but now....ill even check it then.

First thing I did when I got my first boat was to replace the rusted chains on my trailer. Call it paranoid, but this thread confirms you can't be too safe.

I've only been boating a few years but what I've seen trailered makes me never follow a boat in tow. Not everyone thinks they're as important as they are.

I've had everything there is to happen with a trailer to me...except loose a wheel.
I've gotten into the habt of double checking the hookup and lights.

I remember when we lost a wheel off the trailer back in '71. I was just a kid of 4 then. Dad had bought the boat during the summer and we used a loaner trailer to put it in the lake a few months earlier. Now it was Fall (October 31st actually) and we had just purchased our own trailer from Canadian Tire. After the trick or treating we hitched the trailer and headed up to the cottage. I guess Dad just assumed they assembled it correctly.

It was pitch black down a country road when the trailer did a bit of a fish tail and off flew the left side wheel. Dad pulled over and he and Mom went out with flashlights trying to find the wheel. Of course we didn't have a spare, and good luck trying to find a black tire in a black ditch. I sat in the car by myself and every ghost story that I had ever heard about a broken down car in the middle of nowhere came to mind. Keep in mind this is also Halloween! I was somewhat freaked.

Eventually they gave up looking and we drove on with the trailer on one wheel. Most of the time the trailer balanced on its one wheel, but I watched in awe every time we had to stop as the sparks would fly.

Not quite both sides yet.
I forgot to unhook the chains after backing up to the resting spot and unhooking the ball/tounge/lights. Glad I didn't pull out fast!

The other day I saw someone who did not cross their chains, but at least had them hooked up.

Re: stupid human tricks forum is cursed

i meant to quote "jimmy37"....apparently hes the one that bought the boat.

but that sound like it could have been bad too.

that would definately be the other side of the story:eek:.....i bet you wont do that again.

the best lessons learned are from our own mistakes.
