stupid question #56

I feel pretty dumb asking, but all of a sudden I get no gas to the carb on my 77 OMC 351W. Could it be anything but the fuel pump gone bad (mechanical)? I do have gas in the tank, fuel line is clear and I knocked out the anti-siphon valve. Help!
Thanks
Dan

No gas, could be;
- plugged pick-up in tank
- pick-up fallen off
- plugged / faulty water seperator
- plugged fuel filter
- split / kinked / plugged fuel line before the pump
- faulty fuel pump
- plugged screen in carb.
- needle and seat stuck together in carb.

Re: stupid question #56

Thanks for your reply. All very good possibilities. I can blow through the hose coming from the tank all the way through so I'm assuming heres no obstruction. The carb has just been rebuilt as well. If the pickup is clogged/ fallen off, how can you tell and can I fix it? I took the fitting off at the tank, nothing comes off with it from inside the tank. Is it supposed to? what is the water seperator and where is it? My line goes from the tank to a large filter (I guess). There a line that
goes to the in port on the pump. Another line above and to the left of that goes to the carb.
Do inboardshave a seperator? Fairly new to boat mechanics but unfortunatlet learning fast.
Thanks for any help or advice.
Dan

It is probably your fuel pump. Pull the line from the carb and crank the motor over while holding the fuel line in an empty jar. It should pump some fuel. You might want to put that one-way valve back on that you knocked out.

No fuel at the carb when cranking the motor...I put on another used fuel pump I had with no results. I know its not new, but I don't think that both pumps went bad. Although since I said that, it's probably the case. I'm leaning toward a probable problem in the pick-up, trying to figure out how to rule that out. thanks for all help.
Dan

Undo the hose at the top of the tank, then blow into it and listen for bubbles in the tank. You could also hook up an outboard line and use the priming ball to pull fuel from the tank.

Thanks magster....I'll give it a try. I assume that if you can blow through the fitting at the top of the tank, then the pick-up is clear...???
Thanks again!
Dan

Re: stupid question #56

You should be able to blow a bit of air in there fairly easily and it should bubble in the fuel. If that's a go start working your way from there. No shortcuts. Just do an orderly check of every component. You will find the problem and when you're done you'll know everything about your fuel system and if there's ever trouble again you'll find it in a snap.

Re: stupid question #56

You sure you got the new fuel pump on right. There is a metal rod that has to be in the correct position so that the fuel pump will work.
