Looking in the manual it indicates a straight weight oil.

I have asked locally and people have been using 15W-40 diesel oils, which are significantly cheaper. I am flushing out the old oil because of water contamination that I think (hope) may be due to bad shutters that I just replaced. I don't want to spend $$ a high end oil until I'm sure that the water isn't coming from somewhere else. In any event, I need to get this oil out ASAP.

You don't really ask a question.... but if you are asking what oil you can use, then do a search and you will see any and every oil ever manufactured recommended by someone.

Whatever oil you use, be sure to get your engine up to temperature and run it for a good hour or so to evaporate out any trace of water, then change the oil again.

Ayuh,... Not sure what a 4. L mercruiser is,..... but I'm sure it won't mind runnin' on that oil,...

That's actually, Great motor oil for boat motors, in My opinion... ;)

A few typos in my post... I run a 4.3l merc.
Thanks for your input guys. I think I'm on the home stretch. Steep learning curve.

Howdy,

I am flushing out the old oil because of water contamination that I think (hope) may be due to bad shutters that I just replaced.

Bad shutters (or other exhaust related water intrusion problems) don't usually allow much water into the oil.

If you have enough water in the oil to make it appear milky, you should pressure check the cooling system to rule out a cracked block, head, or other leak.

You are absolutely correct HT. Turned out to be a bad riser gasket. In the process of repairing it. I think I really lucked out and caught it before it did any damage. Now I just need to get that oil filter off - I can't reach it. Guess I'll be adding another filter puller to the tool box.

Shell Rotella T SAE 30w(diesel) was recommended to me by the local "Ancient Mariner"(I mean he LOOKS the part AND knows his stuff!). As long as your not constantly operating(starting) in below 40deg weather. Can't beat the $12 a jug either! Spend the extra on a GOOD (NAPA Gold/Wix/Fram X-tra guard etc...)filter.

Thanks Osh. That will save me a few $$. Now I just need to find time to get the manifold and riser re installed. I'm on the home stretch (I hope)!
