This is the first out board I have owned. First two stroke I have owned also. I just got it and cleaned the carbs out changed the plugs and got it to fire up. Tomorrow after work I plan on changing the water pump impeller and the gear oil. My question is How do I change or can I change the oil in the motor? Its a 1987 Johnson 140 VRO.

Since it is a 2 stroke im guessing you mean the lower unit gear lube/oil?

Re: Stupid question

Or do you mean the oil in the tank for the VRO system?

Re: Stupid question

I mean crank case oil like you have in your car. Also will the motor recharge the battery while it is running like a car?

Re: Stupid question

It is a two cycle engine, it does not have any oil in the crankcase, the oil is mixed with the gas. You did mix oil with the gas at 50:1 when you disconnected the VRO didn't you?
Your engine has a charging system, if it is working it will recharge the battery.

Re: Stupid question

2 strokes don't have oil in a pan like a 4 stroke engine.....it's mixed with the fuel to lubricate the engine....

The only stupid question is the one that's not asked.....

Yes it has a charging system.... I would recommend getting a service manual for your engine so you can service it properly in the future ;)

Re: Stupid question

If you are running the VRO and premix, you are heavy on the oil mixture.

Re: Stupid question
