Hi all, <br /><br />I joind a post earlier in the month discussing the merrits of requiring or not requiring a Boating License. Everyone posted their opinions as did I.<br /><br />I bought my first boat this July ans have been enjoying the Boat, Water and Fishing since. I took the USPS Course and had the thing insured. Good to go right? :D <br /><br />NOPE. Has this happened to anyone else?<br /><br /><br />Happened to look online at NJ Requirements and guess what? BINGO  - License required for "Non Tidal Waters" !! WHY didnt the course tell me? Why didn't the insurance ASK? Why didn't DMV ask when the Boat & Trailer were registered?<br /><br />

i think it applies only if you are boating in areas clearly designated as "non tidal waters". these areas are close to wetlands and protected by the government. so, stay away from these areas and you're fine. this is the exception to the general rule. have you been arrested or fined?

In the People's Democratic Republic of New Jersey, you go to the DMV with your 6 points or more of identification: <br /><br /> http://www.nj.gov/mvc/cit_licenses/d_licenses.html <br /><br />click on Proof Of Age & Identification <br /><br />And then fill out the form & pay 24 dollars (prorated for your license expiration date)<br /><br />You cannot just add an endorsement to your old, valid, license - you will need to get the new High-security digital license. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ALL YOUR SUPPORTING IDENTIFICATION OR YOU WILL GO NOWHERE BUT BACK AGAIN WITH THE CORRECT STUFF! <br /><br /> Luckily there is another link on the DMV page that lets you do an interactive checklist of your supporting documentation before you go - print it out & bring it with you if the gatekeeper gives you grief. . .<br /><br /><br />Vere ahr your papers?!? (in a bad German accent)

Yep, KilryJC has it right. In New Jersey you need a license to operate a boat on non-tidal waters. <br /><br />You will be glad you have it when the Coast Guard or State Police pull you over for driving stupid on a lake. AND it is important to realize that any drunk driving arrest on the water causes your auto driving license to be revoked. No if's, and's, or but's.

And having it on salt water doesn't hurt - if you have any dealing with the local maritime constabulary, it at least shows that you have a little bit more seriousness when it comes to boating. NOT MUCH, but every little bit helps ('specially on the Jersey Shore!)

By the way don't let our Governor Goodhair hear about it, between him and Gov. Bush our schools have no money and a new tax without raising taxes is needed.

Re: STUPID - STUPID - STUPID

here's a question! Here in the state of conntaxicut we ned a license to boat. I believe it's for all waters, tidal and non-tidal. DWI offenses get the same penalty as N.J., you lose both boat and vehicle license. My question is, if you don't have a vehicle drivers license, do they just pull your boating license??? Do you have to pay an extra fine if you don't drive a car? It's kinda like double jeopardy here. I'm not advocating operating a boat while intoxicated, but where do they draw the line?
