Re: submerged motor

Consult the shop manual before removing motor from water for details I may miss. You need to get all the water out of the fuel system quick after raising the motor, put plently of oil in the cylinders, pull it over and get it running as fast as you can. Once you get it running, run it for at least 30 to 45 minutes to complete the dry out process. If you removed the motor from the water and let it sit at all, you may have a basket case, since rusting starts immediately.

Have you read the post from page one..."95 Mariner, 25hp carb issue - need help"? It's the ultimate submerged motor story I ever heard.

Re: submerged motor

lol

i had a merc 40. i didnt bolt the bottom bolts down, just the clamps. i gave it gas once and it popped off, did a 180 and went under in salt water. it was under for an hour.

i got her home and FLUSHED her with a garden hose real nice. Then, i took a leaf blower and blew her off like mad. then i took the spark plugs out and flushed them with wd 40. i mean FLUSHED. and cranked. and flushed. then i hooked up the gas, said a prayer and it started to fire and then started.

it ran great after that.

Re: submerged motor

One morning, approaching a beach on the Chesapeake Bay, I hit a sandbar near the shore. The boat stopped and a wave went over the transom. Boat, motor ('69 9.8, Merc 110), everything went under. I pulled the thing up on the beach, removed the plugs and dried them, pulled it about a dozen times and the motor came to life. I ran it the rest of the day. That was about 20 years ago. The motor still runs fine.

Re: submerged motor

You guys had it easy. Last November I had a training class for a week at the company HQ. I wanted to pull the boat(150HP Merc) out of the water, but many things conspired to prevent that. So I tell wifey "Watch the boat, don't let it sink", on my way out the door on Sunday night. Tuesday night it sunk in a storm, and sat on the bottom of the bay (saltwater) until I pulled it up the following Saturday. I stripped it down to its bearings, and oiled everything up. The switchbox, starter solenoid were corroded beyond belief. The wiring harness was rotted out in two places, and the ign switch and gauges were shot.

I got it started and fogged it good for the winter. It seems to run OK

johnz8, use the search facility liberally. Lots of good advice to be found there.
