i think i may have been overcharged for rehabilitating a submerged motor. the servicing agent claimed 3.25 hours were spent on the motor.

the motor, a 2.5hp merc OB, was put in fresh water about two hours after being retrieved from having been in saltwater for about an hour. there were no complications encountered during servicing, and no parts were replaced. the services rendered consist of:
engine cleaned & flushed, oil injection to cylinders, removal of cowling and application of rust inhibitor, electrical system check and spray treatment, spark plug check, cylinder oil injection, fuel system drained & checked, refueled & conditioned, motor run on fogging oil & in fresh water.

can anyone comment, or provide the servicing standard for such work? thanks folks.

Re: submerged motor

Sounds reasonable to me. Submerging outboards in saltwater is not good for them, and to protect them from damage takes some shop time, knowledge, and experience.

The way to avoid these costs is to not dump the motor in the saltwater anymore, or to learn how to do the work yourself.

Re: submerged motor

sounds fair to me,even more so when you stop and consider that he undoubtably bumped you in ahead of people that had been waiting for service.

Re: submerged motor

I'd say that is reasonable. My only comment is if the engine spent much time in the saltwater an overnight freshwater bath would be better. The salt gets into the electical parts and doesn't flush easily.

:)
