I've had the outdrive off a couple times the past few weeks to swap the upper unit. I put it back on last week, fired if up in the driveway with the muffs, forward/reverse, everything was smooth... Until it started getting hot. Turns out the pipe that carries water from the lower unit to the upper unit got left in the old upper, DOH!!! Whole unit came back off and put it back on the next day, sealed her up, waited 24hrs then fired it up in the driveway. Everything is FINALLY working perfect except when I put it in forward gear from idle I get a decent vibration for about 1-2seconds then it smooths out. It's about the same whether it's in the water or not. Put it in the water and it did it 2x in a row then we ran it for about 20 min at half throttle and sat, fired it up and it never did it the rest of the day. So we take it out the next day and it does it the first few times we take off and not again for a few hours later it did it once again.
It's only when I go in forward, reverse is smooth. It did it the first time the outdrive went back on, then I pulled it and put it back on and didn't do it. Now this last time it's doing it again. It only lasts a couple seconds then it perfectly smooth. Everything feels good at idle also.

Alignment of? If something wasn't properly aligned I would think it would constantly vibrate?? Just left the local repair shop and he thinks possibly the shift cable out of adjustment bumping some kill switch?

I had a bent prop once. Shook pretty good at idle but smoothed out nicely under any power.

Testing your mechanics idea is easy. Just unplug the ESA module and go for a ride.

I may have too... Prop is literally brand new. Shaft seems straight also. I can test it in the driveway, it does it on the trailer also

What exactly vibrates the engine OR the drive?

I think the drive. Hard to tell. Could be the motor. I'll fire it up shortly

Ayuh,.... The shift cable is outa adjustment,...

It's stutters outa forward gear, ridin' over the dog-clutch,...

Fix it, 'cause ya ain't gotta to that very many times, 'n the dog-clutch is junk, 'n needs replacin',...

Better than a bearing! How hard is the dog to replace?

What's the general consensus, cable too tight or too loose?

Adjusting Shift cable

Adjusting Shift cable

How do I adjust the forward shift cable? It stutters when going into gear, not sure of it's too tight or too loose. There seems to be an adjustment but I only get 1/4 turn in either direction

Re: Adjusting Shift cable

Turns out it was too tight, small 3/8 bolt allowed me to loosen. Good to go now

Turns out she was too tight. Loosened up a bit and good to go now.

Get the correct tools and a factory manual. If the cable is not adjusted correctly, you will cause expensive damage to gears. Many cobras were killed from poor adjustments.
