First of all, thanks everyone for the help. I got my boat started ,1984 120 mercruiser, and it idles good. Now my problem is I put it in gear and it dies. Could this be the fuel pump? When it is idling I look in the carb and don't see any fuel spraying in there, so how does it still idle?

Look for problems in the shift cutout switch or it's linkage/rigging. If you don't have a manual you will need some good help to get it right. They're kind of a bugger.

At idle your carburetor uses idle jets. They are bellow the throttle plates so you dont see them. Check your shift cutout switch first.

Black plate, back of motor, where the cables go to. There should be a switch that cuts the motor out for a split second when shifted into gear. If it is not set right it will kill the motor for to long and it dies. They are tricky to set right. Its easier if you have a manual to see how to do it.

If you Think the Problem is in the Switch,
I'll bet Anything it's Really the Lower Shift Cable sticking.............
The Only Fix is Replacement.............

Ok I think I might have found the problem. I took the gas line to the carb off and was getting gas to carb. Then I took the carb apart and it is really scaled up, lots of crusty looking stuff. Now I have to figure out whether to try and rebuild and clean myself or pay someone to. OH, I also bought a manual today.

Yes Everyone BOB_VT is back! Sorry about the hiatus but those close to me know what had happened.....

Onto the problem... Check your fuel pump! It will permit fuel enough just to idle and drop dead at any application of throttle. There is an additional line that exits the fuel pump and vents directly into the intake manifold...if you find raw fuel in that line that means the fuel pump diaphram is shot.

Been there and done that.

Bob

Just a little update. I decided to have a professional rebuild my carb. I read , on the forum, about people having all kinds of problems doing it themselves. Plus the guy is only charging 40 dollars. I will give another update when I get it back and installed.
