I was unlucky enough to get a rope with ancor attatched into my prop on my Volvo Penta 8.1 duoprop. the shifter was stuck in gear until all rope etc. was removed and then went back into neutral. my question is does the outdrive have some sort of protection device in place to stop the prop from spinning when it has a problem like this? after removal of rope and ancor all seemed to be fine except for a small dent to prop :(

Unfortunately, when a prop is spinning, there is nothing to halt it when events as you have described occur. A spinning prop is a mighty dangerous and relentless. The only forgiving that a prop might experience would be the braking loose of a prop hub. That is oftentimes the only thing that might save extensive prop damage or damage to your engine.

I would have the prop checked for balance and then try it. bout all you can do. or just give it a try as it, if its a minimal amount of damage it may not be out of balance.

butch, I once saw a Bravo 2 drive that wrapped a chain up in the spinning prop. Destroyed the prop, busted the lower case, and broke the gears in the lower unit. Nope, the only thing that stops a prop from spinning is the shift handle.
Have your prop repaired. You might want to have a Volvo certified repair place put a dial indicator on the props shafts to make sure you didn't bend them. Listen and feel for any vibration after you reinstall the props.
Good luck.
