I was unlucky enough to get a rope with ancor attatched into my prop on my Volvo Penta 8.1 duoprop. the shifter was stuck in gear until all rope etc. was removed and then went back into neutral. my question is does the outdrive have some sort of protection device in place to stop the prop from spinning when it has a problem like this? after removal of rope and ancor all seemed to be fine except for a small dent to prop

No, there is no protective mode to protect your drive from ropes and anchors. The reason your drive was stuck in gear is because the drive has to be free to rotate in order to engage or disengage the gears.

Mine had been in the shop for 3 weeks for the same problem. New outdrive was installed and they didn't fill the unit up all the way with oil and now its in the shop getting another new drive put on, stripped the upper completely.
Mine pulled the anchor into the lower and cracked the housing.
