How can I get a good seal in my 270 outdrive? The drive is sucking air when up on plain. Should I just put a sea **** in the floor of the boat. This system seams to be an issue every time i get the boat out.

That's one option, or you could fix the drive. Which do you want to do?

The most common problem is a corroded hose connection where the water hose connects to the drive, just below the ujoint bellows.

its leaking where the slip joint is for the drive to turn. Id rather use the oem if it is reliable.

Re: Sucking air.

Ok looking at the manual its really hard to understand this. Does the tube there press out? What parts do I need to replace? I have everything apart at home and a 22 ton press. I just need some more info to be confident that im not breaking it. Thanks

Re: Sucking air.

If you have play between the H fork, and the intermediate housing, then the bushing (#11) and bearing (#12) may be bad. In the picture below, press the tube down as shown, then replace the bushing, bearing and seals and reassemble.

The seal #24 is what seals the water passage to the lower unit. Put some grease on the new oring when installing.
The gasket #29 and hose connection are very common places for air leaks.

Re: Sucking air.

I did this repair a couple year ago. It was not difficult at all. Just don't damage the top of the tube when pressing it out, and take your time installing the Gasket #29. get a new # 28 unless yours is in real good shape. I found it hard to get the gasket (29) to sit properly when installing the water neck (#28). Once I tightened it down, I could reach my finger in the open hole and I could feel where the oring portion of the gasket wasn't in properly in the groove, so I found by loosening the water neck a bit, I was able to push the gasket into place through the hose fitting end of #28, and re-tighten.

No overheating since.

Good luck, let us know how it goes.

Found these Pics, not much help...

I cut out this 1x8 so I could stand up the intermediate assembly without damaging the bearing race or drain tube.

Re: Sucking air.

ok i pressed it out and the bearing too. it was really loose and sloppy between #11 and the water tube i pressed out. Is this normal? there is some wear on the tube there as well. Hoping its ok. Its odd to me that there isn't a bearing on both sides. not just the bottom. anyhoo..... I need to get all the seals and bearings to replace everything. I'm worried about the play on the #11 to water tube. The plastic ring in there was broken but i wasnt sure it it was from pressing the tube out or not. Thanks guys!

Scroll up to the top of this thread, click on Volvo parts, then go to the OEM parts link and locate your engine. On the older engines, Volvo listed the drives under the engine model number. Then just navigate to the parts you want.

Re: Sucking air.

Be sure to position the needle bearing cage at the right height. This will make the bottom seal flush with the suspension fork.
The grease port will be above the cage. Stupid place for it, but that's where they put it.
Hand grease pack the needles because the grease port does a lousy job at this. [the cage should have been ported and matched the grease port.]

Put the best needle bearing surface of the pivot tube aiming forward. That's where the load will be.

The lower Oring does not turn against the pivot tube, so you don't need to lube it unless Don sees a good reason for it.
The upper water neck beaded gasket does turn against the tube, so do as Don says and lube the beaded area.

Be careful reinstalling the tube. It can be misaligned a bit and break the top bushing #11.
