Need a prop for my boat. It's a 79 glastron cvx-20 sprint with an 81 mercury black max 175hp. Dry hull weight excluding motor is rated at 1050lbs. Dry motor weight is rated at 370lbs according to that nadaguides website. I will mainly be using the boat for skiing and tubing and some lake cruising. Usually will have 4 people or less onboard. Probably just looking to do a normal 3-blade aluminum prop. Suggestions?

That's a pretty hot motor and a premium boat--in need of a stainless prop. I suggest you find a prop shop for advice. The best way would be to take 2-3 props of different pitches to the lake, and return the ones that don't do the best job. You usually want a prop that spins at max motor rpm--but no higher.

I used to use aluminum props, and would crunch at least one prop per year. (Luckily the prop shop owner is a cousin.) When I switched to a stainless prop, I haven't had an issue in 20 years. They're very much worth the $--especially on a strong motor.

That's a good idea but I'm going to have to buy my prop online to get it for any kind of a price. I'm in canada and everyone around here seems to think their prop is worth its weight in gold. Unfortunately I bought the boat without a prop and don't even know where a good starting point is in terms of pitch and diameter.

Since you don`t have any examples of what RPM and performance you get with another prop it`s going to take a guess unless someone comes by with the exact same setup as you.

If I were to venture a guess, I`d say a 19 inch pitch, 4 blade, aluminium prop by solas would be a good start. Since you are using it mostly for pulling skiiers and tubes its best to start with a relatively low pitch and 4 blade. I say relatively low pitch because that 175hp could probably turn a larger prop to give you higher top speed but might suck at pulling skiiers out of the hole.

Again, I'm just guestimating on that prop but that is where I would start. Also, iboats has a sale on the Solas props right now. I also live in canada and have ordered a few from their online store and it's a better deal than most local shops even with shipping figured in.

p.s. watch your RPMS when you get out on the water. Do not allow the motor to rev higher than the maximum recommended by the manufacturer.

Cheers
