Hi all;
I was perusing the forums looking for maintenance ideas for my 90 horse yamaha and I was noticing a bunch of threads about broken bolts, stripped bolt holes etc. Just about everyone seems to want to put a heli-coil into a stripped head bolt hole or something else that needs to be torqued or hold a lot of tension or weight. I completely understand that many thousands of heli-coils have been used succesfully in this manner for many, many years but there is a better way.
That better way is with a time-sert. time-serts cannot be used in every application, but in the applications where they will work; they are a much better choice than a heli-coil.
I worked in an automotive machine shop in San Francisco for 10 years and we used many time-serts in that time. We very rarely used heli-coils. Only in an application where you just could not fit a time-sert in the spot you were working in.
I have never had a properly installed time-sert pull out or strip, even when being used in conjunction with a torque-to-yield bolt.
If you google Time-sert I think you will find it a much better alternative to the heli-coil, At least look it up and research it a bit in case you ever find yourself in need of something like this.
stay safe on the water guys (and gals)
