Suggestions for account and password manager?

Since every account (email, ebay, PC, router, etc.) needs to have a unique username and password, unless one has a mind like a steel trap (good luck there), it's easy to lose track of what that last username and/or password was.

Looking for a good free or reasonable priced, but SECURE, PC or Pocket PC app, that will help manage multiple account usernames and passwords.

Any input appreciated.

I use Keepass which can be downloaded here:
http://keepass.info/
I have all my password/usernames in it. It is opensource, free and very simple to use. Also takes up very little space. It is what I recommend to people at work and everyone has liked it. Don't forget the password for it though - if you do, you are sol. Don't ask how I know...

Re: Suggestions for account and password manager?

i just made a list in my word program. used tables. maybe 4 columns. gave the list a header and the columns a title(ie. website address, username, password, notes). then listed my info and printed it. also saved a copy to a flash drive. password proteted it.
i'm leary of givein any online sorce my passwords. i'd write them down on piece of paper first.......i don't want anyone but me havein the password and username to my bank accout......i also never let the computer remember my passwords and username when sensitive info is involved. places like iboats forums, i let it remember, but still have my master list if i need it.....

Who's talking about putting the info online?

These programs keep the info in an encrypted database, on your computer.
You use one password to open the database to use the passwords.

No problem. I just re-read my above post.
I didn't mean to yell at you ziggy, sorry if you got that impression.

BTW, I've never used KeePass or anything like it, as I have a Mac, and use it's encrypted "file vault" and "keychain".

:). no problem, though i did take it that way (if that's the worst that happens to me today, it will be a good day). not to mention, i did deserve to be straightened out, (yelled at) as i really hadn't read the link. i was uninformed because of my own lazyness of not reading the link. so please feel freely to keep me in line if so needed....i don't want to give out uninformed info. only substantiated info. if possible...

i stand correct roscoe.
that was supposed to be "i stand corrected". ie. my bad....i just reread my post too. :)

i guess my point was that ya don't have to have a program to keep the usernames and passwords organinzed. as a word program can alphabitize. when i did my list i was haveing the same problems that mscher was haveing. to many usernames and passwords. and my list in word, stored on a removalbe drive was the answer i came up with. it has worked good enough for me. i feel my info is secure by not haveing it located on the computer at all. there is nothing to steal. if the info is kept on a removed, removable drive only. i hadn't even thought of looking for a program that would help me with this list. good idea.......lastly, just as mentioned above, don't forget the password to get into the pass words, as there is no one to help retrieve it cause it is all done internally by you (me)......hope some of these ideas in this thread have helped ya out mscher. that was my only intention, was to offer an idea that has worked for me that might work for you....

this is a great group of folks. they really do try to go out of there way to have sensitivity for others, all the while helping them with their own unique problems......i wish the world in general would work this way..........but it don't...........
have a great day folks. the new years has started and it's count down time to boatin season........

Re: Suggestions for account and password manager?

The idea it to keep your passwords encrypted. The password keeper programs do just that (as does roscoe's filesystem). If someone were to get their hands on your file they would not be able to crack it easily. Depending on the encryption method it could take a "super computer" thousands of years to crack it.

What ever method you use, just make sure that if someone managed to get their hands on whatever you store it on it's still safe. Password protected and encrypted are not one in the same.

I use a program called Password Safe which is similar to keepass. Keepass' screenshots look pretter though imo.

I don't have personal experience with this program, but TODAY ONLY (Jan. 4) you can get a free copy of the $24.95 program "Sticky Password" at the site below.

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/sticky-password/#more-391

Sticky Password Program Description
"Intelligent form filler and password manager that works with web forms and usual programs. Its exclusive user interface solutions allows to save time on accessing and managing passwords.

Innovative password protecting feature will prevent all attempts to steal your passwords.

This site (Giveaway of the Day) looks interesting; one new free program each day, and only on that day. Note that you need to install the program the same day you download it.

Just found this today. Wish it had been about a week ago as there are 3 or 4 programs I'd have really liked to have gotten over the past several days.

Sister site some may be interested in (same deal, but for games): Game Giveaway Of The Day

Cool site lakelivin, thanks.

i386, heard the Webby name, but not familiar with it.
I think it can be used for tracking internet use also.
Kind of like a super duper internet "history" program.

I use KeePass. 128 bit encrypted. I also carry it on a Flash drive and don't have to worry if I lose it. You can cut and paste logins and passwords that most keyloggers will not be able to copy. There is also a plug-in that will log you into your website by just doubleclicking the link once you open the database. As they said above, do not lose your password or all you data will be gone.

I have also started to use Keypass. What a great program!

No need to memorize passwords (other than the KeyPass master password :$ ). Just let it generate complex passwords and just cut and paste in account logins.

I'm also using it as my "vault" to store serial numbers and key codes, etc, for software that I have purchased on line.

Great free program.
