I'm slowly accumulating the new instrumentation for my 16 ft. Bayrunner (aluminum). Looking for suggestions on best locations for mounting. I'll be mounting a Garmin handheld gps, in their marine mount, a fishfinder (brand/model yet to be determined) and probably a compass. I'll also be mounting a couple of 12V accessory plugs to power the gps and a handheld vhs radio.
The first photo shows the console (which is made of sheet aluminum) from the bow - and the PO's mounting of the compass and flasher type depth sounder. That wasn't a bad arrangement since, when standing at the helm (the only way the boat can be piloted, because of visibility issues) I had a good look at the instruments by simply glancing downward. The compass and depth sounder have since been disposed of (free stuff on Craig's List
) and will be replaced with new units. My only concern with this arrangement is possible exposure of the electronic instruments to spray coming over the bow.
The second and third photos show the console in its current configuration. The vertical face of the console front, where the wheel is mounted, is crowded with the wheel and tach on one side and voltmeter on the other. Because of this crowding I made the aluminum "auxulliary" console to allow mounting of a cylinder head temp. gauge and one additional gauge yet to be determined.
So, any suggestions on mounting the various instruments and accessory plugs? I've got space for the instruments available on the sloping face at the rear of the console (like the PO did) and the tops of the console and "auxulliary" console. The accessory plugs could go anywhere, but I am concerned with exposure to the elements. I was even thinking of fabricating a bracket to allow mounting them on the inside of the console. Space and accessibility are issues with the boat and I particularly don't want things sticking out the sides of the console that will get in the way when moving fore and aft.
As always, all input welcomed.
