Suggestions/recommendations about my VRO

ok... I posted a while back that my revs on the engine were high(1200) when I flushed my engine. I put my boat in the water and checked it out again. They vary between 1k and 800. There is some surging going on. From searching and reading...it sounds to me like the there might be something up with the diaphram in my vro assembly.Maybe possible pin hole or something. I run my engine 50:1 and have the vro pluged up. So here's my question. Is it easier to just get at the diaphram? Or do I need to buy a kit? Which means I have to rebuild everything ( don't believe I can do that by myself because I've never done that). Or...I was thinking another option. Maybe getting a straight gas only pump to install. I figure if I'm not using the vro part..then why have to continue to worry about that section(possible leaks and stuff).

I have the fuel module assembly that comes for the 60 degree V6 models that everything is incorporated. my manu.year for my engine is 2000. Also...if the new pump is the best way to go...can anybody recommend a place on the net where I can purchase it.
THX

Re: Suggestions/recommendations about my VRO

A 2000 6V6 150 did not come with a VRO, its a straight ratio pump. I doubt the surging comes from the pump.

Is it surging while its in Quick Start or does it continue to surge after it comes out of Quick Start?

BTW -- the heads arent 60 degrees, the centerline of the cylinders are 60 degrees apart from each other.

Um... Why is the (VRO/OMS) pump disabled on a 2000?

great. Now I'm confused.
Here are the numbers I got off my engine
model: J150VXSIF
family: 11PXMD158210

When I start the engine up....it's rough. It doesn't turn off or anything. AFter it warms up..it still shakes. I put it in gear and go. It runs fine on the high end. Doesn't turn off or anything and doesn't hesitate spit or anything. One other thing is...it won't go over 5k. I don't know if that might be contributing to the problem.
compression is ok. 115 on all 6 cylinders.

It sounds like you need a good "synch & link" to start with.

As for 5000 RPMs. That depends on the load(read: prop pitch, type and weight of boat, etc...)

THe engine before was able to get up to 5700rpm. I always keep my baby clean. Crc after every outing and the plugs are relatively new. I also have checked the spark going to them.
It sounds like you need a good "synch & link" to start with.
If you mean the trottle cable...I can go to WOT and still have some left over. The engine won't go any higher. THe carbs are all synch'd up and I get good response when I gun it.When the trottle is in neutral...all the carbs are closed.

What does "crc" mean?

Thanks,

Mark

Hmmmm? Surging. Won't run WOT.

I'm thinking an air leak in the fuel line someplace.

CRC is a penetrating/anti corrosive oil, sort of like WD-40.

Have to learn to type faster.
I guess tomorrow I'll put it on a small tank and see if it does the same thing.

A VERY good idea. Make sure you use a known good fuel line too.

Good luck.

Jquest
Next time you run engine ,try pumping the fuel primer bulb and se if you get any response. This can help in diagnosing a possible failing fuel pump.If no,try intermittently pushing in on the fuel key primer button and see if engine picks up.This can aid in diagnosing a restricted carburtetor/s.Did the engine set out of use for a spell before this issue? If so ,you may have fouled carburetors. Finally, make sure the fuel tank is venting properly and fuel bulb is not colapsing while running.

Also,as DJ suggests, check for any air leaks or fuel line leaks upstream of the carburetors.Might want to insure all carb bases are air tight as well by insuring their mounting bolts are snug.

Re: Suggestions/recommendations about my VRO

ok....connected everything up today and ran the engine.
1. Found one problem. By accident actually. I was connecting the fuel hose and noticed the plug on the Vro moved. I gave it a little tug and it came off. Apparently...it expanded a little after being there a while and was loose. I orignally got a plug and left it on with the original spring clamp that was there. Apparently that didn't do the job, so now I installed new plug on the vro line with a screw clamp and wala! The surging has apparently stopped. It's reving around 1200. Have to put the boat in the water next week to see come down and what it levels off around.
2. Pushed in the on choke/ignition(fuel key primer button) when the engine was running(held it down) and it slowed down and turned off.
3> Turned the engine back on and pressed on the primer bulb and it got firm. The engine maintained it's revs and didn't go up or down. And the bulb never collapsed.
4 I coupled a see through plastic hose(inch long) right before the white plastic filter. The engine ran good, but I noticed a BIG bubble once in a while. I'm not talking about a steady stream. Just one BIG bubble once in a while. Was the engine slowly getting the air out of the line or is there a problem somewhere in the line?
5. I noticed that the red level on the vro has a little nipple right before you put the lever facing down( 6 o'clock).Turning the lever toward 3 o'clock( counter clockwise) would cause the egine to slow down and turn off. So...am I supposed to put it right at the nipple at the bottom or turn it all the way it I feel it jump the nipple and stop?

Btw...thanks to everyone for all your help. You guys are Shizzel!!

Re: Suggestions/recommendations about my VRO

Jquest,I believe the red lever you are refering to is the fuel primer solenoid.By turning the lever at 90 degrees to the solenoid body you allow fuel to flow past the carbs and into the intake chamber. The red lever is there in case your key primer malfunctions. The lever is turned at 90 degrees to the solenoid body to manually open. The normal "run " position is straight inline with the solenoid body. The schrader fitting with the cap is used for engine fogging and decarbing.During this procedure ,the red lever remains in the normal "run" position.

Sounds like you've found your primary leak problem.Just insure that all other fuel connections from tank to vro inlet are leak free.
