My new (to me) house is brick on the first floor, 8 inch wide clapboards on the second.

The clapboards have been sun baked and are starting to crack. Some will definately need to be replaced. I dont know what kind of wood they are. House was built in 1977.

What is the best treatment to restore some life to the boards? Is oil based paint the best? They are currently painted light brown. I dont know what kind of paint was on there before, will it be a problem if it was latex? The paint is not peeling off now.

I dont need a long term fix, just something to buy me 3 years or so before I have to replace all of them.

Thanks, Ken

A couple cases of Painter's Chalking,+ a few gallons of latex Paint,......Will easily get you 3 to 5 years out of it......

A tube of Caulking,+ a putty knife will make a nearly Junk clapboard Look like New.......Especially after it gets a coat of Paint.......

You can check the paint type with alcohol. Dried latex paint can be softened and removed using denatured wood alcohol.

Would painters caulking be like Bondo to a house?

I found it ironic this coming from Bondo.

But I like that idea. :D

The more I think about it, latex would be the way to go. I hate oil based pain cleanup.

Ken

If you have a huge crack stuff newspaper in it first. I used to help a painter freind. We did a lot of rent houses and the owners wanted the cheapest, not the most economical but the cheapest. Theres no telling how many window sills I "rebuilt" with paper and putty.

Being built in 1977 and that 8" width leads me to believe that your siding is masonite. If it is a more upscale house it could be cedar, and very exspensive to replace today( around $3 a board ft). Also if it is cedar, they should be in fairly decent shape....normal trouble spots like where sisding would but into a roof, or but into a chimney..ect.so if you have alot of bad siding..most likely masonite. You can still buy it and is cheap.....you would be wasting your time trying to repair it. Also you can tell if it is cedar ....with an 8' width...some may tend to be cupped.Use a hammer and chisel and check an area buy chiseling off a small piece....masonite will be like fiberous particles.
