Recently my father bought this this supersport from my uncle for $500 dollars. After 4 months in the shop to get the motor fixed I have finally got it back and am ready to start the restoration. Still trying to figure everything out in my head. There is a lot of great and useful information on this website that I plan on using. I plan to follow suit with all of the rest of you and complete gut the boat. Use Gulvit everywhere i can, flip it over and paint it. Then proceed with the interior. I have seen lots of infomation on boat paint. I have access to a paint both here on base, so hopefulyl this will help things out. Has anyone used por-15 marine paint? or should I go with the rustoleum paint that everyone else has had success with? I am going to use the current floor as a template for the new one and hopefully make a access for fishing rod storage in the floor.

The trailer needs a little TLC, will probably wait until next winter to paint the trailer, right now I am going to concentrate on the boat. The goal is to have it ready for the summer season.

Welcome! Great hull. Hurry up and finish so I can meet you out on the bay somewhere! I put in a Lapidum sometimes and have a bunch of friends with boats at the HdG yact basin. If you're on Facebook, do a search for "Upper Chesapeake Recreational Boaters". It's a VERY active group for boating the upper bay. Check out my SS restoration for ideas.

Welcome to the Tin Drydock, Charle5490. The 18" SS is a good, fun boat. Is that a Johnson on the back, can't quite see but a tinsy bit of the cowl.

EZ i will check out the club, I am looking forward to having some fun in the sun. I have been over your thread a couple of times, you have lots of useful information.

Yes that is a johnson, A johnson 130 to be specific. The mechanic said it was a good motor with low hours, just needed a little help to get running.

The transon was replaced by my uncle not sure how good it is, but looks to be pretty solid.

Does anyone think that having an aluminum floor would be worth it?

I have found 4x8, 1/8 thick aluminum sheets for sale for $120. By the time I buy new wood and epoxy and spend the time to seal them, it might be worth it to buy them. That is if they work. There are 7 avilable, how many do you think I would need. Also at 1/8 thick would it be sturdy enough to support everything that would be put into the boat?

Great looking SS Charle, to use 1/8"aluminum you would have to add some structure underneath to support it. The paint on your hull loos to be great shape, if it doesn't have a lot of scratches give this product a try with an angle polisher.

It is amazing how it brought the paint back on my 201. I have found that the original paint is far tougher than anything we can apply, so if you can save it your better off.

1/8 inch is not to much, I would bet you would need to add support to pull that off. I also have just never seen anyone do it here, so my guess is there may be a reason.

Re: Supersport 180 restoration

Had a very productive weekend. Got the boat complete gutted and pressure washed. Went and bought some 1/2 plywood to get the floor cut. The floor is now 90 percent complete. My shipment of aluthane came in on Friday so once the floor is fully complete which will hopefully be this week, I can start sealing all the wood. The foam under the floor was in good shape, only one water logged piece.

Can anyone tell me how to get the steering wheel off so that I can cut a new console piece?

Re: Supersport 180 restoration

Take the center trim out of the wheel, loosen the 3/4"nut in the center till it is flush with the end of the shaft (very important, you don't want to damage the threads) get something to sit on that will allow you to put your knees on the back of the wheel to push out on it, then give the nut a good solid straight on wack with a big hammer. It should pop right off. You could give it a good shot of PB blaster before hand.

Very important to leave the nut on. Or you might be looking in the yellow pages under Orthodontist. I wedged my knees under the bottom like Dozer said and pull hard the top of the wheel with my hands and then whack with a hammer. Oops, I need three hands for that maneuver. Just pull the top with one hand and whack with the other. Don't use heat - I found out the hard way that you can't control a flame enough close to a plastic steering wheel.

Re: Supersport 180 restoration

Thanks for the advice dozerII and GA_boater. I will give it a try and hopefully keep all my teeth. I just order my paint, I am going to follow ezmobee and use easypoxy. I am going with two colors, 1 quart of each. Will this be enough to paint the whole boat to include the topside?

GOOD LORD DON'T!!! You must not have read far enough. Easypoxy is garbage.

Just go with Rustoleum or equivalents or step up to a two part marine paint. Don't mess with any of the mid-range singe part "marine" paints.

Here's a little sampling of how durable Easypoxy is: http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w200/ezmobee/New Boat/548101_3717225281925_1620637211_n.jpg

Re: Supersport 180 restoration

Thanks for the advice. It seems that a lot of people like easypoxy so I will give the easypoxy 2 a try and see how that turns out. According to pettit it is a little tuffer. Plus it will save me from having to mix a bunch of things together.
