Hello all, I am currently running a 1983 Evinrude 200 hp (E200trlctd) which calls for a surface gap plug. Can regular type plugs be run in this powerhead or only the surface gap type. Are there any advantages or disadvantages to this type of plug. Part of the reason I ask is because they always seem wet with oil when I go to change them, but that may be due to the fact that I have such a long wakeless zone to Idel through before trailering. Any insights from anyone would be appreciated.

there is a optional plug for this that is not surface gap but if fouling the plugs through the five zone take a look at carbs something else is wrong

Re: Surface gap plugs

Thanks for your quick reply Redtech. The strange thing is that it will idle fine through the no wake and will start right back up after sitting at the dock for however long. I am somewhat new to outboards, have always run I/O's. So I was quite surprised to see oily plugs when I went to change last season. There were NGK's in it when I bought it and I wanted to go back to the Champions. It idles fine and turns around 5200 RPM's WOT, should I still look into carb rebuild to help with the plug prob. I raced two stroke motorcycles my whole life and have never seen anything like this in any of my bikes, so thats what led to my concern. Thanks for all the help, Brendon

Tashasdaddy, thank you very much for the reply, I am quite new to this forum but have found it very helpful. Is that dog a Malamute or a Siberian? I have been into Siberian Huskies for about 15 years now and find them so enjoyable. Thanks again for your help. Brendon

I believe your engine will take QL77JC4's which are recommended for extended low speed running. Gap to .035 or .040.

Also I would recommend you stick with Champion plugs only.

Actually I looked up that engine and I don't see QL77JC4's listed as optional plugs... they are listed on mine and other crossflow V4's I assumed the V6's were the same. Someone might be able to tell you of an alternate plug but I'm not sure anymore.

Re: Surface gap plugs

hoeser,
Thanks for looking that up I too have heard there is a standard plug that could be used and have also been told absolutely not to use anything other than a surface gap. So I guess I will stick with the surface gap Champions until I find out otherwise. Maybe someone else out there knows for sure and will chime in....
Thanks to all
