If you have ever surfed Hawaii, Mexico, Costa Rica, etc., it's time you try "Maverick's", on the San Mateo County coast, a few miles north of Half Moon Bay. (Pacific Ocean) This is where a world class surfer, from Hawaii, was killed a few year's ago durning the same competion. San Mateo County is the county south of San Francisco and north of Santa Cruz, California.

Surfing competion started this morning, just after day break, with 20 foot waves, with the wave's expected to reach 30 to 40 feet later in the day. Last year the wave's topped out at 50 feet!!!

Wet suit's are the dress of the day, as the water temp. at this time is 54 degrees(f).

Due to the size of the waves and the distance from shore to where the waves are picked up, the surfer's don't paddle out, but are towed out, way out, by jet ski's.

You might get some of this coverage on sport's news on this evening's tv news.

First prize for this event is $30,000!!! Nice money, if you live to spend it.

The area is just perfect weather wise today, with clear sky's and temp's into the mid-70's, with light wind.

...Bob in Calif...

They aren’t towed out, they are towed IN. It’s called “tow-in” surfing. A jet ski is used to tow the surfer up to (into) the crest of a wave, 40-ft waves are not unusual at the mavericks.

The competition started as something informal several years ago, by invite only within a pretty tight community of upper echelon surfers. No one knew when it will be held, always a last minute thing about this time of year when the conditions permitted. There are several videos of the comp available. The news media picked up on it, someone died (freak accident), and the whole thing grew from there.

I’ll try and get out there this afternoon. If I do, I’ll post some pix.

Well, I make it over to Pillar Pt at 2pm. The last heat finished at 2pm, not 4pm as planned. So no pix, all I got to see was the band, Merman, playing before the awards. Man, never seen so many people in Half Moon Bay before. I guess the event has gone big-time.

One of the officials was saying this was the best year ever for the Maverick competition. Should be good on video when it comes out.
