Hello all, I hope you find yourselves well or at least better than me at this time of day.

Firstly I want to say this forum is a plethora of information and some great people to not only help with issues, but almost a kinda family if you will.

Ok here we go, I have chased this issue for a year now with no luck on finding the solution or finding anyone on any forum with the solution.

I have a 2003 Larson with a 5.0 GL-C engine, last spring I changed the oil and lower unit oil before hitting the open waters (FRESH WATER). After taking it out the first day it ran great no issues. The second day however did not go so well.

I let it warm up as I always do before hitting the WOT, I got it up on plane and then backed off the throttle and it dropped at least 1,000 rpms at the drop of a hat, as a matter of fact my co captain (WIFEY) almost fell down it decreased that much and it is immediate decrease in speed up and down, and after say a minute or three it picked right back up to where it was originally. It did this all day with no rhyme or reason to it except never at idle. It never misses out just drops rpms then picks back up and it could happen right off plane and drop off or after maybe 3-5 minutes of running at anywhere from 2200 to 4800 rpms, maybe 3 seconds or 3 minutes it would pick right back up. It did this all day intermittently, and like i said it had no rhyme or reason when it was going to do it, it would just happen, never overheated and oil is correct on the dipstick both in the block and the outdrive.

Side note, when it does happen it happens so fast if you?re standing up in the boat it will make you fall down when it increases or decreases there is no gradual pick up or decrease in speed it is RIGHT NOW within a split second it happens both up and down in RPMS

So after much deliberation and all the mechanics at the river TELLING me how to fix it, I started to do some research on my own.

One thing I did before replacing any parts was I opened the engine latch up to see if I could tell just by looking what was going on. I took off the flame arrestor and asked the wife to drive while I observed. When it happened and dropped while I was watching nothing looked out of the ordinary and the real strange part was the fueling out of the jets never seemed to change in the slightest bit, or seemed to not change just from me watching it, it looked to be spraying the same amount and speed.

So I started with the coil as this is where everyone told me was my problem, no help, I cleaned out the flame arrestor, no help, I rebuilt the carb, no help, replaced the plugs and wires, no help, put fuel additive (HEET) in it thinking it may be water, no help but like i said it never misses out just drops, the heet was a long shot but cheaply worth a try, and last but not least i replaced the fuel filter (Spin On), nothing and I still have the exact same problem.

I am resonably mechanical with years of troubleshooting experience (used to work for a major deisel company in thier customer assitance center) but for the life of me cannot figure this one out.

I thought it seemed maybe it was changing timing on me but have not tried an ignition control module yet as I thought when they went bad you got a no start issue.

Please, I am a my wits end with this thing, does anyone have ANY ideas on where to go next, I don?t have any pressure testing equipment but I?m sure the local auto places have stuff i can rent and a local rural king to get any fittings i may need to further my T/S, but i feel it is electrical because it never ever misses out but at this point I would like to enjoy it this summer and not work on it all summer like last year.

Any help or ideas are greatly appreciated and again thank you all for just being here forums where the best invention on the internet, People helping People....that?s where it?s at....

Sorry for the long post , just wanted you to know what is happening and what I have done to remedy the issue?thus far

Thanks again.

It really sounds electrical to me, but one thing I would check in the fuel system is the screen in the inlet side of the fuel pump. Lots of them getting plugged up or partially plugged up from paint coming off the filter housing from the ethanol fuel.
I would also get to speed and do a wiggle test on all electrical connections. And make sure the battery cables are tight (With a wrench, ditch the wing nuts)

Hey Mike- I have been fighting a similar problem for a year and found the fix this weekend with my mechanics. It has been VERY frustrating. I will cut to the chase- it was a clogged vapor separator tank (VST) on the port engine. I am running a 2000 Regal 2960 with twin Volvo 5.0 Gi throttle body injection, sterndrives. With similar symptoms to you, we replaced the coil, plugs, plug wires, dist cap, hi and lo pressure fuel pumps/filters, fuel lines, extensive pressure testing underway, and more. When we replaced the hi pressure fuel pump, the inlet screen had quite a bit of sediment in it. Subsequent sea trial and she ran great for about 1/2 hour and began to exhibit same old symptoms, especially under load. Removed the hi pressure pump and the inlet screen we just cleaned was clogged with more sediment! Don suggested checking this screen in his post- as usual he is a guru! It was coming from the VST. Upon removal of the VST we found ALOT of sediment and the inlet/outlet ports were almost completely clogged with gelled sediment. Rather than cleaning it, I am replacing both port and starboard VST's due to age of boat. Best of luck!

Glad you found your problem Jerry, but he has a carbed engine, not EFI. No VCT, so it really can't be his problem.

I know this a totally different motor, but I was experiencing the EXACT same symptoms on my old boat that had an 2008 Mercury Optimax. Finally tracked the problem down to ethanol eating away the inside of the fuel hoses, replaced the hoses and she ran like a champ.

Can someone point me in the right direction on how to get to the screen and clean it please

Not familiar with your engine but what has been invaluable for me in working on my Volvo 5.0Gi's is the purchase of a comprehensive shop/repair manual specific to your engine. I bought a SELOC manual- there are others out there. It gives me step-by-step guidance on how to do repairs. Good luck.
